I love the music, and the dancing is an extra!
by VBellack
If you can, get there early to secure a good table otherwise you're on the side lines. The place is extremely small, but the music, entertainment is always first class. I go every time I visit Portland on the weekend.
- Pros: The Music is Always Great
- Cons: Dance floor is too small
GREAT MUSIC
by kryingwoman
The music at the Candlelight is always good, bartenders are great. The dance floor is way to small for the amount of business they do, and whatever you do if you get on the dance floor, STAY AWAY FROM THE BACK CORNER OF THE DANCE FLOOR! For some reason men try to get you to that dark corner and fondle and do things you may not like! I always have fun when I go and feel safe walking in by myself however, LADIES BEWARE...MOST OF THE MEN I'VE MET THERE ARE BIG TIME "PLAYERS" But it is very entertaining to watch them "play"
Best bartenders, great drinks, fun atmosphere!
by mommasmith
It is such a great experience! Great live music with no cover!!! There are always friendly people, and fun characters to meet to make your night. But the drinks and bartenders are the best, totally reasonably priced and really good! The last time I went in there was a cute fun little bartender, I think her name was Jody, she was great! I totally recommend you go and experience the candlelight!!!! It does get crowded though, but for me that is part of the experience and just a sign of how great the place is!
- Pros: staff, drinks, atmosphere, music!!
- Cons: gets crowded (not always a bad thing)
Stay away from this place!!!

I really recommend not to go to this place as I had a teriable experience there with the unfriendly bartender. I think his name is Scot. He was almost going to kick me out just because I told him that a b**ch was so mean to me because she was drunk and I never replied to her and I told the bartender that please let that woman respect the other customers. He said well, I think I will take your drink and you should leave.
Oh yeah also, I left my drink and went outside for 4 min and when I came back he took (almost full) he said it's your mistake to leave it without covering it by a napkin!!!!!!!!! WTF
- Pros: Great place for elders
- Cons: Service, dirty, unfriendly staff.
Don't go there...
by trvw01
Don't go to the Candelight if you are a white woman. Went there last night (Sunday night) and was enjoying the music at the bar for quite awhile, when 2 women sat down next to me. The one right next to me elbowed me over and over and over and over. Finally I looked at her, and she got indignant. She made nasty remarks, including racial remarks to me. Of course I got mad. I knew that she had an attitude toward me because I'm white, she had had too much to drink and she wanted me to move so possibly one of her friends or someone that wasn't white, could sit where I was sitting. I just didn't feel like letting her bully me. But they ended asking me to leave....
The candelight is a smoky, dirty, greasy, dive....The man at the door is a prejudiced ***hole. The bartender saw what happened but didn't back me up.
Don't go there...
Don't go there.
- Cons: smoky, dirty, bad service, rude
Super fun and Ultra diverse
by cookie888
The Candlelight is a great bar with a very diverse crowd (from the super old guy regulars to the young, hip college kids to the all-time blues folks and more) The staff is fun and friendly. You can dance, mingle, play pool, and catch some of Portland's best music. Definitely one of the best music venues. Sure, the bar can get smoky, but I bet there's a good time had by all. The Candlelight offers a great bar menu, too.
- Pros: Diverse, Service, Music
- Cons: Smoky, Crowded (is that really a con?)
Claustrophobic, smoky!
by contrarianchick
The bands are sometimes great, but the dance floor is too small, the air is unbreathable, and you can't see where you're going. It's a "hangout" so you'll meet interesting people, maybe. I don't know about the drinks because I've never had one. If the owner would go smokeless I'd be there more often and so would my homegirls. I ran into a client from 20+ years ago beside the pool table, zounds....good pool players! Mostly older crowd so decent place if you don't like the 20-somethings.
A longtime blues hot spot with a built-in singles scene.

In Short
Largely populated by an over-40 crowd that's full of serious blues aficionados, this rather small but famous lounge is big on the singles scene. At least half of the clientele seem to be looking for love, which keeps the place busy--especially on weekends--and making the small dance floor even smaller. It's blues almost every night and never a cover charge. The roster does occasionally expand to include soul, funk and reggae.
Great place

The bartenders are a group of the best in town. Looking out for customers and protective too. They get my highest ratings.
a great band to see.....

If you are free on a Thursday night, check out OVERNIGHT SUCCESS with the Kelly twins. Great music, Fabulous vocals, and these guys are very entertaining. Also you shold check out there CD.
Also, although the candlelight is a little more pricy, the drinks are definately worth what you pay for them, and the food is good too.
- Pros: great bands, great food, great drinks
- Cons: crowded, not enough waitresses
