Quaint church - amazingly honest and brilliant priests
by s12 at Citysearch
I've never been one to be a big fan of the catholic church even though I was raised catholic. This church is refreshing. The pastor of this church is amazingly "normal" and fun (and brilliant) to listen to. The church is old and needs to be renovated but it's like a great old first edition book or old vintage clothing. It beats out new and shiny everytime. Give it a try and tell Father JIm hello!
Father Mayo is welcoming to all
by pdxmidwesterner at Citysearch
I recently attended a funeral service at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Although the deceased person was not Catholic, Fr. Mayo made EVERYONE feel welcome at the service. He was caring, warm and humorous. Although I attend St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, another welcoming and inclusive church in SE Portland, I am considering attending St. Michael's based on what I experienced there.
Fr. Mayo Maligned
by JoeMacoby at Citysearch
The person who maligned Fr. Mayo (and all Catholic priests) should apologize. You have no idea of the strugles Fr. Mayo has had over the years. You also apparenly don't realize that a very small percentage of priests have been acused of sexual abuse. Studies are showing that celibacy has very little, if any, connection with the sexual abuse of minors.
Beautiful church
by aundreacaputo at Citysearch
My great grandfather who immigrated from Italy helped build St Michael's church in 1901. My last name is engraved in the bottom step. My grandparents, parents, and my generation have been baptized and/or married in the church. I like how the church is so beautiful inside and has stayed with the Roman style. Even though it's a further drive for me, I prefer the intimate feeling of St Michael's.
Most psycho catholic priest
by crabshingle at Citysearch
I attended Christmas mass officiated by a man named Father Mayo. He ended the mass with a big talk about building a new wing onto the church or something. He went on and on about it and it was obvious nobody cared and everyone wanted out. It seemed totally inappropriate. I know it must be difficult to be a Catholic priest because you have to try to keep at bay your natural and totally normal sexual urges and try to not become sexually deranged as a result and touch young children but come on! This guy is a psycho! Maybe they should let catholic priests get married. We might avoid a lot of child molestation and nut jobs like Father Mayo.
- Pros: some nice people
- Cons: priest a nutjob, organized religion
