Portland's BEST Mex. Cook Has Returned!!

by greggweed

Hi, true Mexican food lovers!

My wife, Shamady, returned yesterday (3/9/09) to the restaurant - after a long absence - at the request of the new owners (our brother and sister-in-law) to resume COOKING!

I REALLY BELIEVE SHE IS PORTLAND'S BEST AUTHENTIC-MEXICAN COOK! True Baja!

After all, her beautiful mother ("Mama Marta", who sadly has passed away), the original cook, taught her the secret fish taco recipe - and the incredible sauces - of "lo mas popular" of all the taco stands of the fishing village of San Felipe, North Baja.

And as far as I know, this is Portland's only place that hand-makes the corn tortillas for tacos, and grills the flour ones for burritos!

So, if you can give peace a chance, give San Felipe a chance.

At least go in, and tell her you're happy she's back! (The food will make your day, and your "saludos" will certainly make her feel welcome!).

Vaya a dios,

Gregg

There are two authentic places for mexican in portland

by Sirisak

This isn't one of them. Although citysearch doesn't show them, los volcanes in Gladstone is hard to find, but impossible to beat. A wide menu of great choices. The do some things VERY well, and some not so great. Try anything in a cream sauce, cocktel de camerones or platos. The fresh pico de gillo is great, and supposedly they have papusas, but i've not noticed. Its small, very authentic mexican style - too much color and vinyl - but the food cant be beat.

The other authentic mexican place i dont recall the name - maria's maybe, is near US Bank at MLK and Killingsworth, on the north east block, just to the east of the gas station.

Support the authentic places before we lose them to taco bell and generic places that microwave cheese on tortillas.

  • Pros: its food
  • Cons: its boring, average and typical

Not very good

by shaft28

My wife and I love to try out local spots - support neighborhood places and everything... Doesn't always work out for you. We ordered some pretty standard items and in every case were disapponted by food. The burrito, tacos - everything was bland if not a little gross.

May be we had a bad experience but it was bad enough that we won't be back.

Eat at the 7-11 next door - you won't be disappointed

by mogal

My friends and I came here on a whim. Bad call. One order a fish taco. Apparently, the restaurant shops at the 7-11 next door, because that's pretty much what he got. Food from the Sev with some French's thrown on top. My boyfriend and I split a plate of enchiladas (half cheese/half pork) with them knowing I was a vegetarian. Halfway through my enchilada, I tasted something funny. Pork. When we went to complain, the cashier was a rude as could be. Not recommended.

  • Pros: Location
  • Cons: Everything Else

Fills a neighborhood need for quick, cheap, authentic Mexican grub.

by Contributor

In Short
The bulk of San Felipe's business is lunch service and takeout for Sellwood-Moreland folks. The space is tight, but clean. Burritos are tasty and fresh. Tortas (Mexican sandwiches) are delicious and fattening--made with fried bread, avocado and heaps of mayo. The unusual tamale is worth a try--it's filled with chicken, raisins, olives, carrots, potato and chiles. The highly touted fish taco is made with crisp, nicely fried halibut.

BEST FISH TACOS IN TOWN!

by pinkymagee2000

the best fish tacos, margaritas and beverage choices. I wish they had table service though, I don't like that anytime I would like another side, drink, ect, I have to get up, stand in line and run my card again.

  • Pros: fish tacos, margaritas, any and every kind of south american beverage (beer
  • Cons: no table service

Best Margarita, Large fish bowl glasses with mix made from scratch - great Fish Tacos!

by nopolito

My friend and I were trying to find a nice, cool spot one hot afternoon and found San Felipe. What a find! The margaritas were delicious and the ambience reminded me of a trip to Mexico I once took. We sat outside and enjoyed the nice breeze while scarfing down some great fish tacos. The service was casual and friendly and, can I say again, the margaritas were delicious! This definantly goes on my list of favorite secret spots!

  • Pros: Delicious margaritas with great service and a nice, casual atmosphere
  • Cons: Need bigger chip baskets and maybe some hot sauce on the table

Used to be cheaper

by manusamo

The burritos used to be huge and only $5, now they're not huge and $6. The torta on the other hand hasn't changed, it's friggin delicious. The fish tacos are okay but nothing special, I don't know why they talk it up since they should be talking up the tortas. They have a nice kitschy interior with old mexican movie posters and a mexican movie on the tube. This place is nice for sunny days of drinking beer and stuffing your face while watching traffic go by on milwaukee and the fatties get fatter at dairy queen.

Great food, but they run out

by rhpot

We come here quite a bit - excellent asada meat. Although the last two times we've gone, they run out of food. First - no more beans. How can you have Mexican food minus the beans. Tonight - we arrived at 7:45 - doors are locked - worker said they ran out of food. Drove all the way from Vancouver - quite a drive - so we weren't thrilled to have to turn around and come back home. Great for them being they are so popular they run out of food, means they are making 'mucho dinero' - bad for us customers who go away hungery. Whoever does the food ordering, obviously needs to be upping the order. Not cheap, expensive for such a 'casual' place, but then again the food is the best Mexican food I've tasted outside of Mexico itself. It's like real Mexican 'home cooking'.

  • Pros: tasty asada meat, homemade tortillas
  • Cons: not much seating, they run out of food, rather expensive
