Worst food I have ever eaten!!!!!!!
by foodguy21
We should have known as we walked in and heard our voices echo off the walls but we decided to give it a shot since it is in our neighborhood. I ordered the tex-mex plate which consisted of canned refried beans wrapped in a tortilla and covered in canned enchilada sauce and cheese. My soft taco was boiled chicken with NO seasoning at all and badly chopped lettuce, tomatoes and cheese!!! None of our food had ANY flavor and was obviously constructed by someone that was not and never was a chef...not even a cook. Taco Bell beats this awful experience.
- Pros: food came fast so...didn't have to stay long!!!!!thank god!
- Cons: Everything was bad

Great enchiladas and atmosphere
by rdifalco
This is our favorite place in the neighborhood. We come as often as we can and we love the enchiladas and drinks. Our daughter loves the flautas and is always excited to see Terry and Larry. They make us feel at home and our bellies satisfied. The spicy green chile sauce packs a wallop and the margaritas are perfect.
Absolutely awful- never going back
by purplespider
First, the server forgot our guacamole appetizer. When we asked for it again there was no apology or even an "oops!" It came just about the same time as the entrees. The green enchildada sauce that was described as the "the spiciest we have" was bland and unremarkable. The Zuni pie was bland- not even the cheese tasted good. How do you mess up cheese? There wasn't even hot sauce on the table to save us. The server didn't come back to check on how the food was- we would have asked him then. When we finished the meal- rather gave up on it- the server cleared our plates and we waited for a bill. After 10 minutes none came. He came back and again confirmed we wanted nothing further. He refilled my empty iced tea glass with sticky sweet warm lemonade. Another 10 minutes, still no tab. After sitting for 25 minutes with a clear table & no bill we started estimating the cash to leave & move on with our evening. My husband went to give him our estimated amount, and he hadn't even added up our ticket yet. Other bummers- there was no music- it was eerily quiet; tacky plastic plants; and the prices were high. We eat out a lot, and rarely have we had such bad service AND crappy food. Never again.
- Pros: sopapillas were delicious
- Cons: bland expensive food, being forgotten by the server
Best New Mexican food north of the Paseo Del Norte
by rfurley1
My wife and I eat in the Adobe Rose every special occasion we have. The review called it good Tex-Mex but New Mexican cuisine is different. Terry and Larry rock! The green chile is great and I would recommend any dish on the menu. You have to love a place that doesn't look at you like you are crazy when you order an over-easy egg on your enchiladas.
- Pros: The owners, The food and libations
Deep in the heart of Sellwood, this neighborhood cafe has been dishing up homestyle Tex-Mex and spicy conversation for two decades.

In Short
Southwestern-themed prints and images of Kokopelli, the Hopi god of merriment, add interest to the terracotta-colored dining room. Many diners have been regulars for 20-plus years and exchange banter on topics from movies to politics. After washing down chips and salsa with an icy margarita, newcomers are apt to chime in. Soft and crispy tacos, shrimp quesadillas, and specials like crab enchiladas come with fresh green salad or rice and beans a la olla.

Yes Virginia, there is New Mexican food in Portland
by portlandave
Recently an Oregonian review claimed that there was no New Mexican food in Portland other than the new place being reviewed. No so. Adobe Rose has been serving up New Mexico dishes for 20 years in Sellwood-Moreland. It's a neighborhood place, and many if not most of the customers are on a first-name basis with Larry and Terry, the friendly owners who switch off as waiter and chef. We walk in the door and they start making our drink order. We lived in New Mexico, and I'll admit that the food is a compromise on the "real" stuff, but most Portlanders probably would not take all that readily to the volcanic flavors of truly authentic fare from a non-chain New Mexico restaurant. It may not be quite the same stuff as Don Juan's Cocina in Socorro, NM, but their chili rellenos and carne adovada measure up well, and the sopapillas are fine. They make everything fresh in house except (to my knowledge) the tamales, which are good anyway. Minimal ambience, but at least they didn't do some fakey decor. Parking can be an issue, but we walk -- one of the joys of living in Sellwood.
- Pros: Good New Mexican food for Portland palates
- Cons: Don't expect Tex-Mex
Cravings
by kaycul
Moving to PDX from Colorado we were craving New Mexican style food. Although the Adobe Rose was cute and quaint, it wasn't up to par for our palettes.
The green chile was not hot and it didn't have any pork in it.
Their refried beans were very good though. They had an excellent flavor.
Sopapillas were good and free....
Service was really good.
We'll go back and try other dishes. I hope they add pork to their green chile.
Local charm
by shaft28
What we liked best about this place was the local charm and feel it had. Right in downtown Westmoreland nghd, with friendly staff and owners.
Food was good, I'd suggest try the specials to the freshest food.
Corn chowder was good. Great margaritas, the main dishes are hit and miss.
Plain interior, but very clean. One waiter for the whole place, don;t go if you ar ein a rush. Said waiter/owner does have an amazing memory for names/faces. Cool guy, my wife loves him.
Can't go wrong when a 4 year old walks in, says hi to the server by name and then states to him that she would like to have a good time tonight.
Very local feel. We'll like it.
