Never had a problem
by eurorunner
I recently tried another german deli, and have to say never will I try something else. The food is always fresh .The imported items not expired .
- Pros: Everything always fresh
- Cons: NONE
This is a exceptional place

Going there was a wonderful experience after the huge disappointment at Otto's. I am Bavarian and I tell you that the meat tastes like back home ! I even found German stuff there I had no idea that it still exists !
Exceptional is also the variety of beers. Coming from a beer brewer background i was delighted finding beers from the oldest Breweries in Bavaria for a reasonable price as well. Just fantastic.
- Pros: High quality food and drink for take away
- Cons: Not very nice atmosphere to sit for food and drink
Best reuben ever!

Expect to wait longer for grilled items but definitly worth the wait! Friendly staff, busy during lunch but you can order ahead so you dont have to wait.
- Pros: authentic german food
- Cons: parking
Horrible customer service and LONG wait.

I've gone to Edelweiss several times and have always enjoyed myself. Not the case today. I waited more than 30 minutes for my sandwich and my number was passed over several times. The worst part of it was that as I was sitting there, the stoner behind the counter and the rude and annoying girl at the register were so into their talking about how hot they were (temperature) that they didn't even think about doing their work. I was late from my lunch hour and the worst part is now my sandwich is sitting in the fridge. I was too late to even enjoy it.
I've worked in restaurants for many years and I know how it gets sometimes when it's busy. This was nothing but laziness.
The only thing good that happened to me at Edelweiss was the sweet stocker/busser who offered to make my sandwich next time since the two people doing it today were completely incompetent.
- Pros: Good food. Great atmosphere.
- Cons: Really lazy and annoying cashier
Best brownies ever!

The Edelweiss is a true Portland gem... I was introduced to the little market as a child by my grandmother who would fill me up with brats on a regular basis. I forgot about it until a family friend who had worked there in high school recommended buying roasted turkey and meats from them, which are amazing. I continue to visit the delicatessen when I get a chocolate craving and I am in the area. Parking can be tricky and sometimes they run out of my favorites, but I always manage to find a nummy pastry. Their rocky road brownies and eclairs are sinful and made from scratch, plus each pastry is under three dollars; this totally beats the trendy, overpriced baked goods of the Pearl and 23rd!
- Pros: nummy food for very good price
- Cons: parking, not an actual restuarant
Chock full of Euro Goodness

The Mister and I finally found Edelweiss (it's set a bit off of Powell past a gas station and we managed to miss it) in our continued quest for a Pacific Northwest replacement for livermush - a sort of poor man's pate consisting of pork liver and parts held together in loaf form with cornmeal that is enjoyed in isolated pockets of the Deep South - and found a reasonable facsimile!
More importantly we discovered their chocolate selection - which included an 85% dark chocolate as well as a grappa infused dark chocolate bar.
They have a truly impressive range and depth of food items (a whole shelf just for pickled herring!) crammed into such a small space.
Unfortunately, we arrived near closing time on a Sunday, so the deli was closed. I will definitely be back to try the reuben (as well as stock up on a case of Kinder eggs)
- Pros: attentive, helpful staff; amazing selection of European snack foods
- Cons: tiny space, could be quite crowded during peak hours
it's a jewel!

I shop there weekly. My fiance is German, and claims it's true to form, not just another "theme" joint. I typically pick up an assortment of meats, cheese, and almost always a pint of their potato salad.
Mostly, I enjoy the little lunch counter off to one side. It appears it's a favorite with locals around that neighborhood. All the lunch fare is great, but my favorite is the reuben. Most joints place a slice or two of pastrami on the bread and call it good. Edelweiss layers the meat on until the bread can't pack it together! And the pastrami is a lean cut, not some fat-laden garbage. Great portion size and a superb value.
- Pros: great variety, authentic, generous portions
- Cons: occasional long lines

Storefront specializing in German products including beer, wine, chocolate and sausages with an in-store cafe for a casual bite.
Ich liebe wursten! (or something)

My girlfriend and I popped in here on a whim and we were so happy to find such a charming little store. Delicious sausages you can eat at the little in-store cafe, a wall of great beers and wines, and a selection of European chocolates to make anyone go hyperglycemic.
This place reminds me of all the cute markets I've been to in Europe, and until I have the time to go visit them over there, I'm very happy to have such a place right here in Portland.
- Pros: Great sausages, Get to hear German!, Wonderful deli
- Cons: A little tight
