Excellent beef, and a good variety of appetizers.

by vipaka

We've eaten at this restaurant before when it was Portland Steak and Chophouse; now its name is Kincaid's. It was good the first time, but we had a better meal this time.

It's particularly good for beef meals. Rarely do we eat beef, but this time that's what we wanted. The colossal prawns have a tatsy batter, and spicy sauce, and are accompanied by celery and the best cole slaw I've ever eaten. The deviled eggs with seafood were good. There were three eggs, split into halves, and there were three varieties, thus enabling two persons to share the appetizer more easily. We both had the pea salad which was good.

One of us had the prime rip as entree and the other had the ribeye. Both were excellent. The ribeye being more flavorful, but both were tender and perfectly cooked.

The service was satisfactory. Better than the Portland average.

  • Pros: good food and plenty of it; good selection of appetizers
  • Cons: noisy, several plates dropped and broken; crashing dishes, bellowing children; waiters flirting with young female customers and forgeting their other customers

So sad!

by dinnerdiner12

I am so sad to hear the Portland Steak and Chop house has closed! I loved their food and their happy hour was the best in town! Luckily I've heard great things about their replacement. Kincaids? I think it's called?? My friends have gone there and said it's even better!

  • Pros: hello new restaurant!
  • Cons: saying goodbye stinks!

Do not eat here!

by bturney

The food is awful. We ordered the crab cakes which were drowned in sauce, which ruined the dish. Stay away from the french onion soup, any normal person would only be able to stand a few spoonfulls before the salty richness makes you want to run to the toilet. Imagine eating melted butter with cheese and you may get some slight indication of what this unpleasant soup is like. My girlfriend ordered the Prime Rib, their "signature dish," which was entirely too salty with heinous mashed potatoes. I had the lamb chops which came out not medium rare as I had ordered, but BARELY SEARED. It was like they had mistaken lamb chops for ahi tuna. I sent the dish back and they finally got the temperature right but it was still very bland and tasted terrible. If you want lamb of this quality, book a ticket to london on british airways. Their lamb chops on my recent flight there were about the same...if not better.

Great service, food nothing special

by hacim

We ate at the Portland Steak & Chophouse tonight. We were seated right away at 6pm without a reservation on a Saturday night. The menu was limited in choices (this is a steakhouse right? only 4 steaks?) and while there were creative options, they seemed to be misdirected. The ambiance was nice but the blue glassware was odd. Our server was awesome. She was very nice and everything was right on time. We've been to many steakhouses before and were not impressed with our food. It was very salty. My steak was cooked perfectly (though salty) but my boyfriend's prime rib tasted like some kind of generic, very dry roast beef. We cook better at home. We were disappointed and won't go there again. It's too bad because I really wanted to love it!

  • Pros: Service, ambiance
  • Cons: Food, value, menu selections

OK food, bad service, horrible value--Many better places in Portland

by vespagirl

This is a fairly expensive restuarant so the expectations are higher than what I'd expect at an Applebees or Sharis. Our experience was very MEDIOCRE. It took 50 minutes to get our food even though we were there early at 6:30 before the main dinner crowd. They gave us a basket with 1 small slice of bread per person (which was VERY good) but they never offered any more, even with the dinner salads or dinner. They forgot our side dishes which finally arrived when we had eaten 3/4 of our meals (no apologies).

The food was tasty but for $27 I only got 4 medium to small size scallops and a serving of mash potatoes. They were cooked perfectly and were tasty. My son had the meatloaf and it was very good. My husband's prime rib was cooked to order as was my dad's lamb chops. So the food itself when it finally go there was good. Not the best or most creative we've had but good.

However, compared to McCormicks down the block this place is not worth the visit. For 1/2 the price there we got 4 JUMBO scallops and had impecable service and food. We definitely wont return.

  • Pros: Good steaks, meat
  • Cons: horrible service, not a good value

HORRIBLY OVERRATED

by brandijn

First of all, we had made reservations about 3 months in advance for dinner for a small wedding party. While the table was nicely set up, the service was aweful! All the glasses were dirty and we were treated as if we were a HUGE inconvienience. We had two seperate tables therefore we had one waitress per table. No problem being that there were only 8 to a table right? Wrong!! After taking our orders (all at different times) we recieved our drinks in a timely manner and then it was all over. It took my husband 20 minutes to get another drink. After finally asking I recieved a refill after 2 hours. After the meal finally came the waitress never checked on us again! The next time we saw her she was bringing us the bill. Outrageously priced for the food we recieved. Being a "great steakhouse" I expected a fabulous meal. Uhh, not so much! The meat I asked for was supposed to be well done and it was medium rare. I didn't send it back for fear of waiting another 2 hours to eat. Most of the rest of the food was cold and the presentation was less than appetizing. When our issues were brought to the manager he made many excuses for the staff. Most of us are in the service industry and there is NO EXCUSE for the way we were treated, nor how the situation was handled!! In my opinion a restaraunt of its popularity should be able to handle a 16 person party without a problem. Especially with months to prepare. We will always remember the wedding night and how the restaraunt did not do it justice. We were dissapointed to say the least. Rude staff, bad food and an incompetent manager. Needless to say we will not be going back!!

Stay away

by gsperson

I dined at the Portland Steak and Chophouse on a Friday night after having made reservations days before. My parents were in town and staying in the same building, the Embassy Suites Hotel. I thought this a convenient place to take my parents. I actually had a poor experience (and this time it was not of my parents doing. <--- small joke there!) First off, it was the LOUDEST restaurant, by far, that I've ever been in, in my life. Bar none, no question about it, I've never experienced anything like that level of noise from the saloon area coming into the dining area before. Our dinner conversation involved constantly leaning closer to each other and straining to hear the conversation. It was really offputting. This extreme bar crowd noise would have ruined the experience by itself, but just to seal the deal, I was served the worst prime rib I've ever eaten. I couldn't eat at least half of it for the edges of it being way too dry and tough. It was supposed to be rare but it was hard enough to break a window. Afterwards I thought how much better the experience would have been if I we would have just dined at the simple Outback Steakhouse franchise (though, I don't know if they have any in Portland. I've never longed for one here before!) Fast forward to the next day - I'm visiting my parents again in their room in the Embassy Suites Hotel and while waiting for my mother to return from the spa, I take my father down to the Portland Steak and Chophouse bar. I was thinking the convenience thing again. And big mistake again! With my beer half way done, the waitress asks if I'd like another one. I say "not right now thanks." What a mistake that was! I should have taken the opportunity to order then as I later would spend 30 minutes with an empty beer glass. Moral of the story - stay away from the Portland Steak and Chophouse. By the way, later that night, I dined at Jakes Original Crawfish and Seafood. It was an excellent experience.

  • Pros: Nice interior decor
  • Cons: Insanely noisy, spotty service, poor prime rib

Consistently good in service and quality of food...

by michelle_h

We have been dining regularly at Portland Steak and Chophouse for years, so I am surprised at myself for not writing a review sooner than now. Service has always been consistently both impeccable and friendly. The staff is very attentive and unpretentious. The food is also wonderful. We have never been disappointed with whatever we have ordered at this restaurant. We have dined at Portland City Grill on several occasions and to be honest, I really prefer Portland Steak and Chophouse. The prices are much more reasonable and the quality of the food is pretty much the same or better as Portland City Grill. Today, I was pleased to learn that Portland Steak and Chophouse is now available through Delivered Dish. Happy hour is a great deal (I have been here many times for happy hour), and in spite of the extremely reasonable happy hour food menu prices, you still receive excellent, attentive service. I could not be more impressed with a restaurant. I certainly hope they keep up the the wonderful service and food they have been providing. I have been going here for over a decade and it has always been excellent.

Great steaks and prime rib, awesome service

by foxyroxy1494

My boyfriend and I decided to go to PS&CH last minute for a late night dinner. I ordered the prime rib and he got the petite top sirloin. I was disapointed to find out that our dinners didn't come with side salads, as most steak dinners do. We got some really delish sourdough bread instead to quench our hunger. The wait staff was very helpful and attentive to all of our needs. The steak and prime rib were delicious. We were so full, we didn't have room for dessert. Next time, we will definetly get dessert because they have a large dessert menu, not just a few things. This place is perfect for a romantic dinner with that special someone. If you're looking to impress someone, PS&CH is the place to go.

  • Pros: Great tasting food, awesome service
  • Cons: None!

Staff was above expectations - Food is Great - A must if your in Portland

by rodessa

My husband and I travel often and one of our favorite things to do is to try a new steakhouse. The Portland Steak and Chophouse was excellent. The staff was very attentive and the food was awesome. If we were to return to Portland we would visit the Portland Steak and Chophouse again. The atmosphere is elegant but casual; it is a place that you can go with a group a friends as well as a romantic dinner with that someone special.

  • Pros: service is great - food is above average - great location
  • Cons: always busy - make reservations
