My boyfriend and I decided to try Ruths Chris tonight for the first time and were sadly disappointed. I looked on citysearch and like many places there were both good and bad reviews, but we decided to go for it in good faith anyway. The waiter was nice, but the steak had gristle, the crab cake was weird and gross, and the stuffed chicken breast was just overcooked and nasty. The creamed spinich was ok, and the augratin potatoes were too cheesy in a bad way. (I love cheese so it was strange.) Another thing I found akward was when the waiter asked if we enjoyed the meal and I casually said it was "alright." A couple minutes later the manager came over to check on us, and even though it was in good intentions, the whole thing was really akward. I wasn't in the mood to tell him the truth about how I really felt about the overpriced, mediocre meal. Maybe we had too high of expectations because we enjoy Morton's Steakhouse and they are at compaible price ranges, and Morton's is WAAAAAYYYYY better.
Pros: Nice waiters
Cons: Food not up to standards for "quality" steakhouse expectatins and prices.

Our reservation was at 5:30. We got there and they had rose petals one the table. Nice touch. We felt very welcome. We had the restaurant largely to ourselves for the first half of the meal. I recommend eating early if only to avoid the noise level of the 7-8 o'clock crowd. We had: 2 glasses of 14 Hands cabernet-- --Barbecue Shrimp -- --Ceasar Salad and Gumbo-- --Petite Filet and Lobster with side of au gratin potatoes-- --Creme Brulee and Fresh fruit with cream sauce-- --Chilled Baileys-- 2 glasses of Sparkling wine-- $202 all together. The meal was excellent except for the somewhat bland potatoes (other reviewers seem to corroborate this complaint). The barbecue shrimp was flavorful and just enough to whet the appetite and not fill us up. The ceasar salad was typical, nothing to rave about. The gumbo was the best I've had--just spicy enough, nice, complex flavor--I'll go back if only to have this at lunch. The filet was cooked perfectly and quite tender and was perfectly fine sitting on the plate alone. It was more than enough to satisfy. The Lobster was a hair tough, but good nonetheless. The creme brulee and fruit with cream sauce were absolutely fantastic. Simple and delicious. Highly recommended for a special occasion and if your expectation level can handle the price. If not, enjoy a less expensive restaurant that you'll enjoy. There's nothing worse than feeling like you got ripped off. We didn't because we knew what were in for and had a wonderful meal. We'll go back annually (at least).
Pros: Atmosphere, food portions (meaning not huge), food preparation, professional service
Cons: Bland side dish

Although I salute their abilities to serve an excellent steak, since when has $8 for plain, lukewarm, steamed brocoli been acceptable?! The Service was slightly noticable, but not a place for anyone who enjoys their water or a clear table. All and all I wouldnt go back based on one hot plate of highly over priced meat and less than tasty sides to jack up the bill.
Pros: gorgeously hot plates of perfectly seasoned meat
Cons: no notice for detail nor a good complimentary dish to the entree

First of all, let me say I dine out all the time. Came here as a party of six, the service was excellent from beginning to end. The salads were great, app's nice, dessert awesome. The cheesecake was the best I have ever had, server's suggestion. The only problem I had was my fish was undercooked. I have salmon all the time, I know it should'nt be overcooked. But red all theway thru is not good for $44.00. I don't eat meat, so maybe that is the problem, El Gaucho did the same thing with the salmon. Anyway, all in all everyone loved their steaks. I will order vegetarian next time. Also, why don't people in Portland dress up? I felt like I was dining at a family buffet restaurant.

I felt compelled to review this place (it's my first posting) after hearing about Ruth's Chris and how fabulous it was. I'm very sorry to say I feel this restaurant is overrated and much too expensive for what you get. I'd like to compliment our waitperson, Jillian, who was very knowledgable and friendly and provided exceptional service. Everything else about the experience, however, was lackluster. The Ceasar salad was tasteless and dreary. Luckily, I didn't have much time to eat it before our steaks were brought out (major faux pas for a supposedly high-end restaurant) Our steaks were unspectacular and poorly seasoned. I have the feeling I could get the same thing at Outback for FAR less money. The sides were bland and forgettable. Perhaps the chef has a salt phobia???? The wine list is vast and lovely but obscenely overpriced. Just try and find a bottle of wine for less than $100!!!! Dessert (I had the cheesecake) was obviously a commerically prepared variety - very dissapointing. My date's cappaccino tasted horrible (how the heck do you mess up a cappaccino????). Perhaps it was just an off night - I really don't understand it at all, given the stellar reputation Ruth's Chris has and all the good reviews I've read about the place. But when I pay $200 for dinner (for 2 people), I expect far more than I received. Unfortunately, I can't say I'd recommend this restaurant, nor will I ever return.
Pros: exceptional waitstaff
Cons: Unfortunately, you do NOT get what you pay for!

I personally wouldn't eat at a 'Ruth Chris' steak house again. Over rated and over priced. The steaks we ordered were dry and not tender at all. It's ridiculous that you pay 25$ smackers for a steak and then you have to purchase a baked potato, salad, and the trimmings. Sorry, doesn't work for me. If you want a great steak at a great price with all of the trimmings check out 'Wolff Lodge Inn in CDA, IDAHO. These folks know how to cook a great steak at a great price without the frills.

I went to Ruth's a month ago and I wasn't impressed at all. The service was great but the appetizers were lousy, very greasy and not that good, you can get better at TGIFs, and the dessert, cheesecake, was subpar. The filet mignon that I ordered was cooked wonderfully and it tasted good but that's all it was. A huge slab of meat, with side orders that I can make myself : mash potatoes and asparagus. You pay and arm and a leg for a plate o meat. All I can say is that I was excited to try it but now that I've been I don't understand the hype and I wiill not return. But for you major carnivores that are rich, this might be the place for you.
Pros: Service, slabs of meat
Cons: average food, overpriced

Office party of 17 dined here last night for the 3rd year in a row. We ordered the $47 Argyle Sparkling wine (2 bottles), but were told they were out. As a substitute, they brought 2 bottles of Perrier Jouet ($41 from the wine list). BUT, WE WERE CHARGED $49 FOR EACH BOTTLE! Did they think we wouldn't notice??? We were also charged a $105 corkage fee for 7 bottles of wine we brought, despite being promised no corkage fee (fee was waived the past 2 years we had our party here). Did they think we wouldn't notice??? We were charged ONE EXTRA ENTREE as well! Did they think we wouldn't notice??? Because of the size of the party, they added a $20 gratuity. No problem, except it was computed AFTER the booze, corkage, and valet parking charges were added. Did they think we wouldn't notice??? Well, we did notice. Apparently, Ruth's Chris Portland does not want our repeat business. Their wish is our command.
Pros: Good steaks.
Cons: READ YOUR BILL CAREFULLY! Extra charges magically appear!

I know it sounds funny I am writing about the great chicken for a steak place but I don't like steak. I took my mom here for Mother's Day and I had chicken since I don't like steak and thier stuffed chicken is so good I go back just for that.
Pros: Great food
Cons: Would like more non steak items on the menu.
