Clarifications of some previous reviews
by smarci
I saw the previous review that was obviously talking about the Mazatlan by PGE park and I definitely agree that they got the wrong place. I do have two corrections: They DO serve chile rellenos! I know because I get the chile relleno plate almost every time I go and it is THE BEST in town for sure. Also, they do now accept cards, but there still is no alcohol and they are still weekDAYs only, which is too bad cause I often get a craving for their food on Sundays!
I've seen all the rave reviews about La Sirenita and La Bonita over on alberta and I think they are crazy. Compared to Mazatlan, their food is bland and expensive. The prices at Mazatlan haven't changed since I started going there in 1999. I don't work downtown anymore, but I battle the traffic and parking because it's just that good. The food has always been consistently excellent, service consistently fast and friendly, atmosphere bright and clean.
- Pros: Best chile relleno in town, great veggie tacos
- Cons: It's downtown
Best service I have had in so long!!!
by bear1985
Tonight was the first time I have been to Mazatlan, and I am so glad I finally came here. Not only was the service amazing but the food was fantastic (as were the margaritas)! I go out a lot and this restaurant has the best service I have had in Portland. I would definitely recommend for wonderful food and service! Check it out!!!
Oh and they are open for dinner now too (the last review said they weren't, but they are now)! They also take credit/debit cards as well now... that's how we paid tonight, so there must have been some changes since the last review! Enjoy!
- Pros: Awesome food, drinks and service!!!
- Cons: none
Family-owned weekday breakfast and lunch spot near MAX
by clcarr
I love this place - the family who own it operates it weekdays from 9 am - 4 pm, serving the best homemade beans in the city. Ingredients are always fresh and quality is excellent. Service is fast. Vegetarian-friendly too. My favs are the bean taco rico (a delicious guacamole like sauce with a grilled double corn tortilla wrapper) and a side of rice. My kids love breakfast here - burritos with eggs lasts the whole day. My husband and I order a burrito with ejotes (green beans) which are great for breakfast too. Yummy potatoes can go into your breakfast burrito or on the side. No alchohol served here and no chile rellenos (one review on this site mistakes this taqueria for the Mazatlan chain restaurant near PGE Park). Breakfast opening times can sometimes go a little later than 9 am but if they are not planning to open that day, they will post a sign. Usually we can just tap on the window and they open the door for us. One block from the MAX stop at Oak St, walk north to Pine. Daily specials for $5.50 is a generous plate and popular. CASH or check only!
- Pros: Quick service, fresh ingredients
- Cons: Doesn't serve dinner, only open weekdays
Tasty, no-frills Mexican food for the lunch-hour crowd.

In Short
Rattan lined, brightly colored walls lend this downtown lunch spot a warm-weather vibe. Office workers, construction guys and art gallery owners all hit this spot for a midday fix of Mexican flavor. Tacos are large and stuffed full of well-seasoned meats like asada, carnitas, chicken and cod. Any of these meats can be wrapped up a hearty burrito or served as a torta--a Mexican sandwich on a soft roll with lettuce and guacamole.
Fish Tacos!
by amcintyre
I have tried almost all the Mexican places in town and Mazatlan has the most authentic and delicious fish tacos around! I started going there when they had just a taco stand on 9th and Alder and was overjoyed when they opened a full scale restaurant. They also offer a taco rico which has cheese and guacamole on it which is fabulous! The employees are always very friendly and usually will remember your face and what you like to eat. The prices are very reasonable!
- Pros: delicious food, reasonable prices
- Cons: ambience
Hits the spot!

Great service and prices! Conveniently located for down-town workers and really hits the spot for a lunch-time craving. Their burritos are the best!
WHAT A BURRITO!!!
by napoletana
I love their bean and cheese burrito! There are other trendier Mexican places around but their food just does not stand up next to Mazatlans' menu! Much better food, friendlier service, and MUCH cleaner than the others in down-town. Move over Taco del Mar, your mediocre fare is in for a challenge!
Good, but bland
by shaft28
Three of us popped in on the way to a Beaver's game last night. My 21 year old brother-in-law-to-be from Texas & Louisiana was not impressed. Let's just say he lft his enchiladas and ate bad pizza at the game.
My fiancee liked her meal and loved the margharita.
Said up there with Oba's!
Me, I though the super burrito was ok, but bland. The tamale was all cornmeal, and bland. The chilie reyeno (sp?) was, well, bland.
The chips were good, and salsa nice but a little weak in flavor.
Get the hint.
Service was outstanding though. Very helpful and attentive.
- Pros: service
