Disappointing Happy Hour

by Sushiloverpdx at Citysearch

We had heard the Heathman had a great happy hour so my partner and I both went on a Thursday night to check it out. We ordered 5-6 plates between us and only really liked 2. The oysters I had were really overcooked and tough but the sauce on them was great. The pate was by far the worst I have ever had. I also ordered the roasted pear and chevre salad which was absolutely excellent! The cheese plate we got was very very miniscule for 5.95 (even by happy hour standards). the bread they serve you when you sit down is very yummy though.

But beyond the sub par food, the worst part of our experience was the service. We were one of two couples in the lounge for the late night happy hour and our waitress was fine up until half way through our meal. We were waiting for our water to be refilled and order another round of cocktails but she was too busy chatting with the hostess for the next 15 minutes (I kid you not) to check on us. When she finally did come over we asked to order dessert. She gave us the menu and went back to talking with the hostess. We sat again. and waited again for a good 10 minutes trying to get her attention. Finally we got the attention of the bar tender and asked for our check instead. the bartender cashed us out and we tipped her instead of our waitress.

Note to waitresses/waiters= pay attention to the patrons instead of standing around gossiping with your hostess friends. Especially when we were your ONLY table.

For paying almost $60 for a happy hour I expected Portland city grill quality/ Higgins quality. I got neither and we will not be returning. There are so many great happy hours in portland, don't make the mistake of going to this one.

  • Pros: The pear and chevre salad/ martini
  • Cons: almost everything else

Very disappointed

by atsjlc99 at Citysearch

I have no idea what people see in this restaurant. We made reservations for Thanksgiving dinner and were asked to confirm twice. We were told we got one of the last reservations. What a joke. There were tables everywhere, people walking in off the street. Very loud, very expensive, poor food.

We dine out four or five nights a week. I would never go back to the Heathman and would never recommend to anyone.

Following our dinner, I called and asked to speak to the restaurant manager. I left a voice mail where I was assured I would be contacted as soon as possible. Still waiting.

Really makes you wonder if the reviews for this restaurant are from actual customers or conjured up by the restaurant staff. By the way, this is a McCormick and Schmick.

  • Pros: Can not find one
  • Cons: Too many to list

Not worth the prices

by wooster at Citysearch

I was there as a guest, so I didn't send back my entree -- it had about 5 mussels on it, and none of them had opened. That means they're _bad_, and it's shocking that a plate was delivered to the table that way.

The ambience is lovely, and aside from serving unsafe shellfish, the service excellent. The food was fairly good, but not up the standard that I'd expect at those prices. I think they subscribe to the "1 stick of butter per serving" rule of thumb, because everything was too rich. The crab cakes were swimming in a rich cream sauce, and a crab cake shouldn't need that.

We went for dinner at the heathman 3 days ago, and i am still upset about the average dinner that we were served.

From the halibut to the overpriced new york steak ($50 for about 10 ounces) everything was dry or overcooked.

The menu (20 plus entrees) might be to big for the kitchen to handle.

With so many great restaurant in portland, the chef might want to pay attention

  • Pros: service
  • Cons: food, value, ambiance

A high priced cafeteria.

by awisemansaid at Citysearch

A real disapointment. On the outside it seems so regal and elegant. I wanted to take my speacial woman someplace romantic a few nights ago and I norrowed it down to the heathman. The noise was almost to much to bear. It was very crowded. The service, slow, and not at all romantic. The food?Just okay. This place seemes to be a high priced cafeteria where portland elites dine after a concert or show.

I was tempted to leave throughout dinner.

I wished I would have chosen another place.

  • Pros: good location
  • Cons: crowded, expensive, loud

Fallen from grace

by ktaylorbrown at Citysearch

We ate the Heathman for our anniversary in December of 2001. The food was wonderful, and the service was excellent. However, this December (2002) was a completely different experience. Our french toast was just this side of burnt, as were our potatoes. The ribeye steak was so fatty and underdone that neither of us could eat much of it. And once the water, juice, and coffee were delivered to our table, not a single refill was ever offered. Never again.
