I just discovered this city search thing so I think I'm going a little crazy posting. It's so nice to be able to state what I feel about businesses. I can't tell you how many downtown places are just plain rude and this place was no exception. I stumbled across this store on my way to Johny Sole. What a mistake. I barely had time to look at anything before the front desk girl asked me to take my bags. I told her that all I had was my purse and my dog carrier with my dog in it and if I gave it to her my dog would freak out. She just walked away all mad. Now feeling uncomfortable from her response I left. Went to Johny Sole's place and found the cutest pair of summer shoes and a one of a kind summer dress. They never gave me any flack about my dog carrier, very helpful with the selection as well. Guess I can post something cool about them next!
Pros: Next to Johny Sole
Cons: Rude staff

Magpie is the one vintage/thrift store I can count on for a consistently amazing selection of clothing. They are inexpensive but the selection is amazing... you do not have to leaf through many items to find a gem... I much prefer Magpie to other "similar" stores in Portland (like Buffalo or Red Light) simply because there, good items are hard to come by and it's really luck when I am able to find something I love. At Magpie, I *know* I'll find cool things - and ACTUAL vintage merchandise (old old) as opposed to ugly early 90's wear. Staff has always been very kind, personable, and helpful - no snobbery. yay magpie.
Pros: great selection, excellent vintage section, quality merchandise, good staff, great price
Cons: hmmm.. i'm not sure.

I am the 'Greek' girl listed under the 'Deplorable' review. I am not Greek, but thanks for the assumption. I'd love to respond to the comments made. I think most people are able to read the store's hours, as they are clearly and legibly written on the sign on the door for all to see. Everyone else seems to be able to figure it out, so why can't you? Secondly, working in such a lovely store allows me to know full well what we have in stock and what we do not. If we have an item comparable to something someone wants, I will know of it's existence and be sure to point it out, as sales increase this way. So your blatant allusion to me or my co-worker's denying you something we do indeed have is not well thought out and does not make any sense.. Thirdly, we ask every customer of every variety to check bags in upon arrival in the store. Most people comply with no attitude, it is the people who unnecessarily balk, protest, or act strangely about it that we immediately suspect, as it is a pretty routine thing done in boutiques in the area. You were not singled out in being asked, nor were you asked to leave. This was a a gross exaggeration, and thinking otherwise is vain and narcissitic. Also note that every other review is glowing. Your personal view on your experience does not give you permission to write a review with detailed descriptions of an employee's physical characteristics mentioned. To do so is blatant defamation of character.

I absolutely love Magpie! I have gotten my prom dresses there the past three years and always find them to be beautiful and really resonably priced. The employeees are GREAT! They help me pick out whatever I need and always offer their honest opinion. I love everything about this store and would highly suggest everyone go there. Just a lovely, fun store with a really great atmosphere. Keep it up Magpie!
Pros: employees, quality, experience, and variety

I attempted to stop by several times in a course of a month, they were always closed. The store window displays had changed several times so I knew they had to be eventually open for business or why would they bother? One day around 1:45 they were open and someone was there! I was elated! I slowly walked up the stairs absorbing the intricate vintage placement all around me. I was grinning from ear to ear, I also had about 2,000 cash ready to drop on many different things that I needed to obtain for upcoming events. A Halloween costume, Christmas and New Years eve dinner dresses and jackets was my hope. A young 19-20ish caucasian/greek? girl with black hair and another young (beautiful) african american girl (I USE THIS DESCRIPTION SO THE OWNER CAN FIGURE OUT WHOM I'M SPEAKING OF) barely looked over at me. Too involved in their magazines. I was running my fingers through a white, luxurious, faux fur, 70's, long sleeve, short jacket and turned towards them and said "excuse me". Very nicely a might add. Do you have a furry jacket like this but longer? The darker girl just looked at me almost frowning and said "No". Funny thing is, out of the corner of my eye I could see something long and white and furry and as I was about to cross the room to investigate the light skinned girl said to me. "I need to take your bag". "My purse?" I tried to ask. "What ever" she replied. I told her that was an impossibility because I had cash in it and wouldn't want her to be responsible if it walked away. Then guess what she said? "Then you can't shop here." My mouth dropped. I walked up to the counter and almost handed her my purse and I stopped took a look around the store, saw that indeed the long white fussy thing in the corner was a coat and walked out. Now keep in mind I am 5'10' 130lb size 3 with a platinum a-line. I can't remember what I was wearing that day but I'm sure it was smart. My "bag"? 6" long and 10" length and 2" wide PRADA. I was so insulted I felt sick.
Pros: Can always hire new people
Cons: I think those girls are still there

I really dig this cute little shop, it's been around for awhile for a good reason. The cloths are always clean and well kept. My only complaint is that some of the boutique type fasions that people bring in for sale can be a bit overpriced, but the vintage clothing selection is usually well priced.
Pros: Good selection, quality vintage goods
Cons: Home made fashion clothes are a little spendy, off street parking is a pain

I've been to Magpie a few times and have always been impressed. They take great pains to organize and present clothing and apparel. All clothes are in excellent shape and are sold at decent prices. Employees are very outgoing and helpful.

I am a member of a 70s disco tribute band called HitExplosoin that plays in the portland area frequently and every time we are in town we make an effort to go to Magpie to shop for quality vintage threads. Magpie consistenly has the best stuff for the best prices and we never leave without finding something awesome. Magpie is the best I've seen and I've been shopping for this kind of stuff for almost 9 years. Magpie rules! Harry
