I had better food at Home Town bufet
by BoyRomanian at Citysearch
I went there last night with my friend, ordered th 5 dollar 40oz pabst. NO problem with that.
I ordered the 3 sampler and i got the buisquits and gravy, 2 sides!!! the busquits were awful, they were hard like so hard i could not break them with the fork. when i complained and said that i was leaving and not paying for the food and i did not want a replacement. the waitress got rude and said "what now we have to trow away 30 $$ worth of food? I replied saying if your food would be worth the 30 bucks she wouldn't have to trow it away!!! she then insisted that we pay for my friends food s"since there wasn't anything wrong". I refused and will never return to that dump!!!
- Pros: none
- Cons: the food the service and the rude attitude of the staff
If your a drunk then you'll love this place.
by LMHPDX at Citysearch
This place is really not for you if you want good food and good service. If you like to drink then this is the place for you. You will notice that all of the positive reviews of this place mention the drinks and all of the other comments are negative and refer to the food and service. If your drunk then the food and service may seem as great as the fancy drinks. Of course they make the most money from the bar so to hell with the food. I am very disappointed as I remember the old Delta Cafe as a great place to eat. (never really very good service though). My main disappointment is with the owner who flat out does not care about mine or others experiences of poor service and bad food. It comes down to money. DON'T GO TO DELTA CAFE
- Pros: Far from my home.
- Cons: Bench seats in lounge very dangerous
**HANDS DOWN MOST AWFUL DINING EXPERIENCE IN PORTLAND, OR**
by kazzbar at Citysearch
**THIS RESTAURANT IS AWFUL** My friend and I went into the Delta Cafe with thoughts of flavorful, spicy creole' food. What we received was quite the opposite. My friend ordered the "special" which was chicken and dumplings. The server dropped the spoon into the soup and didn't even bother to remove it.. but told my friend to "fish" it out. We tried the soup.. The broth was awful. There was no flavor at all and the vegetables didn't even have a taste. It's as if all flavor was cooked out of the soup and dumplings. I got the "Better than your Mama's Chicken" and I have to say, my moms chicken would trump this dish. In fact, I don't fry chicken often and I know for a fact I could do it better than that. I chose red beans and rice and mac & cheese. The only good thing on my plate was the mac and cheese. It is the ONLY thing I ate. When the waitress came to take our plates, she noticed that we barely touched our food and asked if we needed to-go boxes.. we stated no and that we were not impressed with the food. Her response was.. "oh ok".. then she walked away only to return with our bill and no apology. Then, a male waiter comes to our table to ask why we were complaining and wanted us to write the complaint down rather than just correcting the problem. The food and the service are terrible at this restaurant and I wouldn't recommend it.. that is unless you want bland food and poor service.. then this is your place.
- Pros: The lighting is awful, so you won't get to see the food before you eat it.
- Cons: Other good businesses are closing down while this one stays open.
Customer service??!?! What's that?
by Erin1984 at Citysearch
I TRIED to have dinner at the Delta Cafe not too long ago. I had never been before and was looking forward to it, I had heard good things. So I get there and order an iced tea, my friend gets a beer....so far so good. Then about an hour and a half passes and we had not been offered new beverages, let alone our FOOD. We tried to get the waiter's attention several times, and were repeatedly ignored while we watched all the tables around us...who were sat AFTER us by at least 20 minutes...get their food. Then when we FINALLY flagged the airhead down, he acted like he couldn't care less. Then he shows up another 20 minutes later and literally throws our food in front of us (i'm saying he physically dropped the food from standing position, a good foot or so, and then walked away). Alas, OUR ORDER WAS WRONG!! After such a wait, and such horrible service, we were so upset that we couldn't even it what we DIDN'T order. It was an awful experience.
- Pros: It's NOT conveniently located near my house
- Cons: over-priced, horrible service
Hopelessly Disappointing
by LJB32 at Citysearch
I would really like to eat at the Delta, but somehow each time I try the place, I am hopelessly disappointed. From surly service to cold food to long waits, the Delta just ain't what it used to be. Don't even try to order take-out food - I have been left on hold, had the phone hung up, and been ignored for several minutes. The food also leaves a lot to be desired. The greens are too mushy, the grits to gluey, and the steak over salted. BTW, where did the Chicken and Dumplings go? As for the waiting, it seems that Delta time does not involve customer service. Tables go uncleared while wait staff chat about their dogs at the counter.
Too bad. The neighborhood could use a a good local place.
- Cons: Poor Service, doesn't take credit cards, mediocre food
Reminded me how far away I was from home. The worst excuse for a Southern restaurant I have ever experienced.
by Michael504 at Citysearch
This place is terrible... Were do I begin.
My girlfriend and I moved up here to PDX from New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. Occasionally homesick, we tried to find a few places around here to get some southern comfort food.
Unfortunately, this place is the worst excuse for a Southern restaurant I have ever experienced.
Ever heard of Southern Hospitality? They have no concept of it here. When we walked in the door, an employee at the host stand just looked at us, didn't say a word, turned around and walked off to find something else to occupy herself. We waited for about five minutes until the next party walked through the door and promptly wrote their name down on a seating list hidden behind the host stand podium. The silly cap gun holstered, goofy-frame glasses girl at the host stand that left us stranded was obviously too tragically hip to let us know we had to jot our names down on the seating list, so were we were skipped by this other group who, sadly, must have been here before and known the drill. It took us nearly an hour to be seated at a table, and the wait continued still.
The food was trash. I ordered "red beans and rice" only to get a plate of chili beans. Chili beans??!!! When someone orders red beans and rice, don't give them a cup of Wendy's 99 cent chili. My girlfriend ordered a po-boy, and she got a nasty looking slice of bread with a single leaf of romaine lettuce and a couple of oysters. The bread they used was bad enough to ruin a perfectly good sandwich, but to call a sandwich a po-boy when you replace the traditional fluffy mound of shredded crisphead lettuce with a single wet leaf of romaine is an atrocity. If Harry Lee were here, he?d jail you for that.
After waiting over 20 minutes for the bill, we realized the only way to get our check was to leave the table and flag down one of the passing employees pretending to ignore us.
- Pros: nothing
- Cons: everything
Horribly Rude Staff
by motrcity at Citysearch
Arrived on a recent Friday night. There wasn't a wait list. We asked to sit in the bar and were just handed menus and told to seat ourselves. We headed to the bar to find there were no available seats. We were left standing in the bar with no table. We turned around to find a large group of people now waiting on tables in the restaurant. Within 5 minutes two tables opened up in the bar. One very dark and cold table that a couple had left after already getting menus and waters and a warmer cozier unclean booth. We put our coats on the cozy booth to reserve it while they cleaned the table. A server came by and told us we could either return to the dank table (not even our table) or go sign up on the wait list behind the now huge line. I tried to explain what had just happened and that we were just told to seat ourselves, he refused to listen and was extremely rude. He schooled me that "you just don't sit at an unclean table, you just don't". Hmm, neither of us had actually sat anywhere at that point, and now will NEVER sit in this restaurant again. This restaurant is NOT worth the trouble. By the way, fauxhawks, not that hip.
- Pros: Nearby
- Cons: Bad service. Rude staff.
Avoid at all costs!

If youre looking for good old southern hospitality, then the Delta Cafe is not for you. Appalling is more fitting a word to describe the service at this restaurant; no, no, how about horrendous?! My husband and I have been there several times. Not once have we received remotely good service but weve returned with the hopes that the previous visit might have been a fluke. Just last night, we sat down for at least 15 minutes and the servers paid no mind to us whatsoever. Did I mention about four of them walked by our table several times with absolutely zero acknowledgment? And whats worse, your restaurant wasnt even busy. Let down, once again, we walked out of the restaurant disappointed and completely fed up. Ironically your restaurant has great food; its too bad the service (or lack thereof) is revolting! As a customer and a former server, I might add that our economy is going to take a dive one of these days, and all the poor servers will soon be out of jobs, not to mention restaurants out of business. Good luck to you Delta, you have the food but not the crew. There are plenty of other great restaurants that will gladly accept our business.
- Pros: Good Food
- Cons: Service stinks, not worth your time
Worst dining experence ever
by terrence123 at Citysearch
I am sorry but being from New Orleans and knowing how to cook creole and cajun foods. This place does not have a clue. Red Beans and rice , the only thing right was the rice.
Poor-Boy sandwich is a joke at $9.00 you think they learn the how to's and what to put on the sandwich and what kind of bread to use. Sorry folks you have failed BIG TIME...
- Pros: friendly, prompt service, willing to do right
- Cons: poor quality, shrimp overdone
The food isn't worth dealing with the staff.
by rebirtha at Citysearch
Sure, I liked it well enough while I was in school, but over time the rudeness of the staff started wearing thin. I've listened to them behind the bar making fun of the patrons, I've been condescended to, and once a waitress saw fit to lecture me about tipping practices, saying I didn't tip the time before (which was untrue, and if someone pocketed my cash tip it still isn't her business to say to a customer 'It's common tipping practice to leave fifteen percent, and a lot of the servers here think it's not worth their time to wait on you.') I am not making that up-- I was mortified and it's not worth my time to spend my money and be treated badly.
- Cons: the waitstaff
