Full-service gym offers weights, cardio equipment, sauna, steam room, classes and personal training, open for most hours of the day.

by Saira Masood

In Short
With classes ranging from 24 Hour Tease, a sexy strip aerobic class, to the more subdued Vinyasa flow yoga and butt-kickin' boot camp, this active sports club is packed with health conscious (and some insomniac) gym goers. Stocked with the latest cardio and weight-training equipment, this gym cranks up the pumping music, flicks on the Plasma TV sets, and lets fitness fanatics work out according to their own schedule. With affordable rates and a friendly, knowledgeable staff, personal training is another tangible get-fit option. And while the moniker is somewhat misleading, on most days the door is open for at least nineteen hours--not too shabby.

DIDO PEARLPDX

by Ernee

DIDO pearlpdx regarding how terrible the management of this gym is. I have written time and again about the lack of shower curtains in the women's showers. I've heard the same complaint from many women in the locker room, but may concede that the manager just really doesn't care. I'm almost tempted to bring in my own! Just an FYI, to those who like this location but would like a better experience, there is an LA Fitness opening up on 14th & Northrup in November. Hopefully they will take more consideration in making sure the manager and staff have better customer service sense.

Worst. Gym. Ever.

by pearlpdx

I've belonged to a number of gyms over the years in NYC, Chicago, and now Portland. 24 Hr Fitness in the Pearl is far and away the worst. If it were possible to bestow less than one star, I happily would have.

Some specifics: the cardio equipment is outdated and frequently broken. None of the treadmills have built in fans, and half of them don't even have heart rate monitors. The temperature control is non-existent. All of the cardio equipment is situated upstairs and it gets scorchingly hot up there. Although there are several fans mounted on the ceiling, they are *never* actually turned on - a baffling decision. There is one paper towel dispenser in the entire gym and it's located upstairs by the cardio equipement. They were apparently too cheap to place them in the bathrooms....you have to use an air dryer after hand washing. There is a dearth of available space to stretch out, which matches the lack of available mats at any given time.

All of these complaints would be tolerable, given the good location if it weren't for the following:

This gym has the absolute worst management of any professional company I have ever dealt with. First, it's impossible to actually speak to a manager. The front desk is staffed entirely by people in their early 20's who obviously do not care about customer service or satisfaction. They are rude and dismissive as a rule. Since they refuse to produce a manager, complaints must be left with a front desk staff member who dutifully writes down the complaint and then throws it away as soon as the angry customer has left the counter. I hate this gym so much that I'm still in the process of trying to cancel my membership - and I can't because "there's no manager available....and the manager has to do it". I can't overstate how unprofessional, disappointing, and flat out maddening it is to be gouged on a monthly basis for such horrific service. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT JOIN!!!!!!!

  • Pros: Location
  • Cons: Horrific service, equipment, and parking

get place if you want to get treated like cattle, bring your own tazer

by efg123

I have been a member of at least 6 fitness clubs in the last 20 years. This is by far the worst. They have been unable to keep their equipment working for more than a week straight, and it often stays unrepaired for multiple weeks on end. Their elliptical equipment is outdated. They truly couldn't care if you were a customer or not unless, of course, you use one of their personal trainers. If you read the internet, you don't need these trainers to tell you anything you couldn't learn yourself. The cardiovascular machines are very overcrowded. The fitness classes and weight machines are just as bad. They never restock any of the paper towel machines so that you can clean your own machine. Which I highly recommend, since I've never seen a staff member clean a machine. DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM. YOU WILL WASTE YOUR JOINING FEE AND THE 60 DAYS UNTIL CANCELLATION FEE AS WELL.

  • Pros:  skimpily clad people
  • Cons: everything else

Good gym

by coffeeguy01

Great in a good location. The trainers are well educated and they are willing to help out at all times. The classes are great to take as well. It gets a bit crowded in the evening and it can be a challenge to use the equipment. Right in the center of the Pearl.

  • Pros: staff, equipment is always up to date
  • Cons: Parking can be a major headache.

Too crowded, but good equipment and classes.

by pdxnewbie

This facility has great equipment, both for strength training and cardio. However, it has become too crowded at hours when most people would actually like to work out. Waiting for cardio is the worst part. Waiting for weight machines, free weights, etc has also become a pain. With all the new condo construction, the population around the Pearl will only increase and make the situation worse. This would be a good place to work out if it wasn't so crowded. Most of the staff are friendly but I do feel some come across as being 'too cool' to acknowledge members...unless you're a hot gal or guy (just an observation). The membership cost is reasonable. Parking is scarce depending on time. Agree with a previous review regarding more available eye candy compared to other locations.

Very nice big gym

by flowerd2004

This is a large gym that does at times see crowding. Busy times are between 5pm and 7pm as people are just getting off of work. It is likely that you will be waiting for the cardio equiptment and classes are quite full, however, it's not much worse than the Hollywood 24-Hour fitness, which has the same problems at that time of day. One major plus is that the clientel at the Pearl location are, overall, much better looking than at the Hollywood location. Very good equiptment selection and layout throughout this gym and nice that it has a pool/spa/sauna for those days when you want to mix up your routine or relax after your regular workout. Overall, I find it worth the extra drive to go this gym after 7 vs. going to my "local" 24-Hour Fitness in Hollywood.

  • Pros: Low membership cost, classes, attractive people
  • Cons: Crowding from 5-7pm

This place is too crowded!

by spagorl

I agree with the other member who talked about how crowded this place is. It is a zoo in the evening. And since the evening is the only time I have to work out, I am stuck until my membership is up. I won't even go into the locker room for fear of bumping into some sweaty person at this time of the day. It is ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and find a less crowded club.

  • Pros: lot of equipment
  • Cons: too many people, lines on the more popular equipment

Stephanie is an awesome trainer!

I have recently started working out with a trainer and I am finally getting the results I couldn't get on my own. Stephanie knows her stuff. If you have ever considered stepping up your work out consider Stephanie as your trainer, she's awesome.....

  • Pros: free classes, pool, large facility

Only good if you can go during off hours

by jerry tristan

This gym is always packed with people from 5-9pm and unless you got there early, expect to wait for equipment. And wait. And wait some more. The amount of people who want to use the cardio equipment outnumbers the amount of treadmills, bikes, elliptical trainers etc. by a large margin. Oh and good luck finding parking during those hours. Don't bother with this gym unless you can workout in the morning/early afternoon. It's a freaking zoo in the evenings.

  • Cons: , Not enough equipment, No parking
