My FAVORITE place!
by melonsky at Citysearch
My boyfriend and I absolutely love this place. My boyfriend's father lived in Hong Kong for 18 years and says Fong Chong is the most authentic food he's had anywhere in America. They serve dim sum all day and the servers are very friendly. If they don't have something on the cart they will make it for you if you ask. We typically stuff ourselves silly and the bill for both of us is around $20 or less. It is basically our weekend "getaway" in terms of food.
In response to an earlier review written by laura16, where she wrote ---"We had ordered the sticky rice wrapped in a leaf, but had the chicken sticky rice wrapped in a leaf brought to us. It tasted horrible and had one of those small hot dogs in it."--- I have ordered the same thing and did not care for it either, HOWEVER traditionally, that is how it is made (cooked with Chinese sausage, chopped Chinese mushrooms, chopped BBQ pork ...) of course, the recipe varies depending on the cook's preference, but basically she got exactly what she ordered.
Bottom line, I would highly highly recommend this place. Be sure to order the ginger chicken wrapped in foil, it is absolutely delicious.
- Pros: Ginger chicken!!! prompt seating, great variety of food.
- Cons: Have to pay to park, but its worth it because the bill is cheap.
terrible customer service
by laura16 at Citysearch
I went to Fong Chong for the first time a month ago and thought it was great, so I took my boyfriend back last weekend. The service was completely different and horrible -- They were out of most of the dim sum we wanted, but instead of telling us, they brought us out a similar, but more expensive plate (since they probably assumed we wouldn't know the difference anyway)! We had ordered the sticky rice wrapped in a leaf, but had the chicken sticky rice wrapped in a leaf brought to us. It tasted horrible and had one of those small hot dogs in it. When we asked the waitress about it she said they were out so they gave us the bigger one and charged us for the bigger one.
On top of bringing us something we didn't like or order, she overcharged us for it! After she wouldn't budge on giving us the price of the plate we actually ordered, I pointed out that she had overcharged us for what they gave us anyways. We were expecting to pay $12 for lunch but got an $18 bill.
The waitress was very rude, and the whole time we were there we felt like they were trying to squeeze every cent out of us that they could. We will not be returning.
- Pros: good bao
- Cons: terrible customer service, no ambience, very hit-or-miss dim sum
Best Dim Sum
by drdanpdx at Citysearch
The dim sum here is some of the best in town.
The service is very good the dim sum carts go by so often that I have to take a break.
I go in right at opening and get it to go also.
- Pros: Foil wrap chicken and lobster rolls
WHY have you gone downhill, Fong Chong

My family has been going to Fong Chongs, or "Bobs" as we called it when we knew the owner, since I was a child. I'm now 21 and haven't eaten there in almost 6 months. SIX MONTHS. There are still some of the original waitresses, and they're great, but the food?? Back when there used to be a shop next to the restaurant the food was always fresh, hot, delicious!! But now?? My usual dim sum, haw gow, is now a 50-50 shot in the dark -- will it be cold and greasy, or hot and scrumptious? Your guess is as good as mine. Even the basic won ton mein has changed from very delicious EVERY TIME to a toss up! Last time I went there the noodles were uncooked and still in the ball they were supposed to be boiled out of!! What! I heard that the managment changed from Bob to his son, and then to the sons uncle; the point is it's not the same. I love'd Bobs as a kid, but since this expansion not only am I down cheap 70 cent Botan Rice Candy, but I'm also hungry. And what's up with them changing portion sizes!? The dim sum used to be 3 giant pieces per plate, now it's 4 puny and sometimes over/under cooked nuggets. I'm sorry Bob, where ever you are, I don't know what happened to Fong Chongs.
- Pros: sometimes good food
- Cons: parking, sometimes not good food, sunday wait
Never Fails

Sure it's not the prettiest place with the fanciest decorating. Sure it could use some touching-up and the waitresses can't speak English very well, but they do a fine job, (I have been coming here since I moved from Japan 11 years ago and the waitresses that were there then are still there now)!
Fong Chong serves traditional street food from southern China which my relatives in Canton ate many years ago. It's not Chinese food that has been infused with American food. This Deen Sum is traditional and flavorful. In particular, I suggest the sticky rice wrapped in a grape leaf, the steamed hum bow, (look for white steamed buns) and ha gow, a whole shrimp in rice wrapping.
Even though many more of Portland's Asian population, including myself, are starting to go to 82nd, (which also has many, many good restaurants), I still think people should not forget about the original Fong Chong's, which is the most inexpensive, filling, tasteful food I can think of. I don't suggest Fong Chong's to people who are germaphobes and people who are all about atmosphere, but if good food is what you care about, then go!
- Pros: Great, inexpensive, traditional food
- Cons: Not the prettiest place
Chinatown's best dim sum is found in this slightly run-down spot.

In Short
This Old Town mainstay's slightly shabby and décor includes brown and orange vinyl booths and bucket swivel chairs. The daily dim sum lunch here draws Pearl District professionals and weekend diners. While its competitors may throw just about anything into a wonton wrapper, each dish here is distinct and flavorful. Two of the best dishes are the barbecued pork cookies and the sticky rice steamed in a giant lotus leaf.
Good dimsum Cheap reminds me of places in KowLoon

The dim sum here is great. They even have a lot of options that I never ran across even while living in Hong Kong. Prices are very affordable. Two can eat too much for only $20. The place is basic in decor, like most good dimsum restaurants in Hong Kong, and the dimsum is diverse, hot, and tasty.
For dinner, you've gotta' try the Bai Hua DouFu (White Flower Tofu).
- Pros: Taste, Price
Going Downhill
by b00pi3flak3s at Citysearch
It used to be such a powerhouse but as service has gotten worse and the demand has lessoned, it seems they are just letting everything go. Its a shame really, the food is now bland during Dim Sum and dinner that the Chinese community has easily flocked to other better and less spendier locations.
- Pros: Value
- Cons: Parking, Food, Service

some dim sum are flavorful while others were not. the "fun gor" was delicious but the more traditional "fung jal" (i love stewed chicken feet) was not good at all. hit and miss at this place.
