The worst service in town
by mdawnhart at Citysearch
I went there for lunch with a friend and experienced some of the worst service ever. We ended up leaving after about 40 minutes--after receiving only 2 courses of COLD food and then being told that the credit card machine was broken with a paper jam. It was not crowded, so I don't know what the excuse was for such poor service. Both my friend and I felt like we were, in the restaurant's eyes, completely unimportant. I've eaten at Fong Chong's before but I won't be going there again.
- Cons: , cold food, expensive
Back in Hong Kong
by o at Citysearch
Can't get more authentic than this place. The good places in Hong Kong have to have these special ingedients to be good. 1) ducks hanging in the window.2) scary hospital /dressing room lighting and formica tables 3) very surly waiter who yell at each other across the restaurant in catonese. I walk by this restaurant one night and new instantly it was good. Their menu is diverse and thier shrimp is the best in the city. Very large and succulent. A must if you want decent REAL chinese food.
- Pros: totaly awsome seafood, great BBQ pork, sring rolls very good
Don't go on a Sunday afternoon!
by madermouse at Citysearch
I had always heard about the great dim sum at this place, so I dragged my hubby there on a Sunday afternoon. (much to his dismay)
I looked like a fool when the same two carts rolled by over and over with the same tired, luke-warm trays of dumplings, sticky rice and chicken feet.
I have been here before when it was packed and the varied array of steaming hot dim sum made it a fun (albeit) daring experience to remember.
Evidently, a slow Sunday afternoon does not spotlight this restaurant's strengths. I also noted that the prices have increased for several of the items in the past two years.
Tasty dim sums if you can get them
by eating_in_pdx at Citysearch
Quality is good, but selection is poor. This isnt because they dont make enough varieties. In fact, they have many varieties; they just dont bring them out until they have nearly sold out all the dim sums that are currently in circulation. What this means is they push the same dim sums around and around until people order them because theres nothing else to order. The premise behind dim sum is to eat a wide variety of desserts. A good dim sum place should have lots of varieties in circulation at all times. This is not the case with Fong Chong. I have been there many times on Sundays, and its the same situation each time. Why do I still go? Because their dim sums are tasty if you have the patience to wait for them.
- Pros: Tasty, not expensive
Portland has better dim sum
by stronzo at Citysearch
I have been to many dim sum places in the Portland area and I found this experience to be less than touted. The dim sum was cold and flavorless and I didnt find the menu to be very interesting. If you want some good dim sum then go a few blocks down to Seven Stars and enjoy. I'll leave this place to the more trendy.
- Pros: great grocery store, nice servers, food presentation
- Cons: food quality, food flavor, terrible envoronment
As expected, good dim sum
by yazfan at Citysearch
Coming from San Francisco I was very pleasantly surprised by the Dim Sum offerings. Price was reasonable, and service was lacking as expected. Also had dinner on a weeknight...stick with the Dim Sum.
- Pros: Dim Sum
It's bigger and better now
by earthdog02 at Citysearch
Fong Chong has expanded into their grocerie store next door and is double in size. With new management in 2002 the Dim Sum is even BETTER than before and the furniture seems to be newer and cleaner. They are trying to have better service, and hopefully, as they get the kinks worked out, their service will continue to get better. Fong Chong is my favorite downtown Dim Sum resturant.
Good dim sum
by jennifertom_citysearch at Citysearch
Fong Chong has pretty decent dim sum, so it's too bad that it's gotten so run-down and dirty. I wouldn't go there for anything but dim sum--their other meals aren't that great. I think Legin is better, all around.
- Pros: cheap, convenient
- Cons: run-down
