Highly Unprofessional Staff
by crazyfinn at Citysearch
Myself and 3 friends went to Marathon Taverna last night. We were not required to show ID to enter, and went in and sat at the back of the bar.
Almost immediately, one of the bouncers came up to me and asked to speak to me outside. I complied without any resistance.
He told me that "2 people told me you flipped me off" which was completely untrue, and I responded as such. We were at this time right at the threshold of the font door. He repeated his claim, and I also did.
I did not offer any resistance other than verbally telling him that the claims were untrue, and in a calm, non-threatening voice. I asked to see who these people were to substantiate his claim.
At this point, the bouncer did not reply as he knew his claims were untrue, and shoved me. I slid backward down the slope to the door and fell down onto the sidewalk because I was wearing dress shoes with little grip. I skinned my knee and tore a hole in my pants and we left.
There is no reason to be assaulted by the employees of a business in this manner for no reason whatsoever other than stating that their claims of my behavior is untrue and asking them to produce the witnesses they claim.
Further, this business is located on Burnside, which in my opinion is a busy street even at night and someone pushing patrons at the door on the narrow sidewalk could very easily result in someone falling into the street and having serious injury if a car is driving by.
I used to go to Marathon quite often, but highly unprofessional treatment and is potentially very dangerous. I will never go here again and recommend that you do not subject yourself to this possibility either.
Rude Service

We managed to get kicked out of this place for simply asking for an itemized receipt. Two bartender ladies got very upset when we asked to see an itemized receipt. It was over a hundred dollars and there's no way we drank that much! They said we we're questioning their honesty and we're refusing to pay? Anyway, we did pay, and gave no tip so they kicked us out. We ended up going a whole six months later for a friends birthday, and THEY RECOGNIZED us! Kicked us out again, it was kind of funny but still lame!
- Pros: Cheap
- Cons: Rude Service
Iconic Portland

If you want a bar where you can go in shorts, jeans, a suit...or whatever's comfortable, here it is. I miss sitting at the end of the bar near the window so I could look out on Burnside, especially on a rainy day. The best and worst of Portland patrols the streets and sidewalks of west Burnside, and you can see it all from a comfortable seat at a great little, friendly bar. The prices are great, the food is good, the wait staff is friendly, it's conveniently located...it's a tiny chip of old Portland that the hipsters haven't yet ruined. They have a great online jukebox, pool, darts, video games. Next time I'm in town, I WILL stop in for at least one round.
- Pros: price, location, convenience, parking
- Cons: none. it is what it is.
The Bartenders are rude slow and standoffish

If you want to be treated like a putz for drinking in a bar then you will love this place . Rude and arrogant describes the Bar staff . . . . Really not friendly and they act like its a pain to serve you even when seated at the bar . Fix this mess this bar used to be fun . Hey wait til the modern and clean new sports bar opens up next door at the New civic Apts , maybe then the wait staff will begin treating their customers with some respect .
- Pros: It's Nice and Dark inside
- Cons: slow service , rude and arrogant bar staff
If i could give it less than one star I would

I was there a couple weeks ago, and when i received my bank statement they added a one in front of the 5 on the tip line. The staff is rude, slow and makes the worst and weakest drinks i have ever had. Go somewhere else. There are many other better dives in town.
- Pros: none
- Cons: rude staff and patrons fine example of in breading
try to get over it,heres why.

I admit that I haven't been to the Marathon in quite some time, but there is a reason for the way things are going. I remember about 15 yrs ago when I started going there. The owner Gus cared about his costumers, and he tried his best to make people feel good about being there. I regeret to inform everyone that Gus has retired and his daughter is now in charge. I watched this girl grow up,and her brother too. I also think that his wife brings a breath of fresh air into the place when ever shes there. I read that the bouncers were rude,go when Harold is working, hes a real nice guy if you give him a chance. The waitress that added the tip with out permision should have been fired at once! I hope gus reads this, maybe he will stick his where it belongs.
- Pros: online juke box, good burgers and the best Gyros you will find anywhere.
- Cons: The cons in other ratings pretty much have it down.
POS

I've been here many times always trying to enjoy myself but just cant. They make some of the weakest cocktails I've ever had just to save a penny on alcohol. The waitresses are usually rude and stand-off-ish. Occasionally you will get one that will actually pretends she cares. And they try and cheat you out of your own money! I paid with a credit card but tipped in cash, therefore I wrote zero tip on my credit card slip. When I looked at my credit card statement, they added $2 in tip for themselves! The waitress was lucky that I tipped her at all, waiting 30 minutes to get a drink is ridiculous! But for her to have the nerve to alter my credit card slip, that's shady.
- Cons: Weak drinks, rude servers, over charging, parking, dirty bathrooms...
Worst Dive In PDX

I strongly urge anyone considering visiting this bar to change their mind. I say this because I feel that a business' ethics should be taken into consideration before you give them your patronage.
- Pros: Non
- Cons: Bad Service, Horrible Bouncers, Rude Staff
Great Prices and friendly staff

I love this bar. It offers almost every thing I love in a bar. Great prices and friendly staff. Great place to go to on after work and have a beer or any of the well drinks offered at an amazing price.
Great Bar

I certainly wouldn't call it authentic Greek food, or the best Greek food in town, but I would call it the best value Greek-ish food in town. If you're craving a good gyro and a few beers, this is the place to go. The atmosphere is somewhere between a dive and frat house (more frat house in the summer when the college kids dominate the place, more dive in the winter and on weekdays). The wait staff aren't exactly rocket scientists, but they'll get you what you ask for quickly when they remember. Expect to be carded unless you're old enough to be carrying an AARP membership card, but I blame that on the OLCC, not them.
