Great Dr. John show
by BIOS Dude
Of course, the show was great. We are right in his demographics.
The people at the Roseland were very nice to us. Maybe it's that this show draws an older crowd? But everyone from the bartender telling my wife all about the different beers and even suggesting some they don't even have to the inside security guards letting us sneak upstairs during part of the show, everyone was nice. Of course, this is a Portland institution and it's a great place to see a show. Highly recommended.
First time and I hope to go back.
There were quite a few people walking around on the sidewalks, so even my wife felt fairly safe and she is easy to freak out.
- Pros: Cosy place with nice people
- Cons: The area is slightly seedy.
plenty of space but still can't see
by Sallypie
The only thing going for this venue is space and it's balcony. This venue has ample room for moshing and general crazyness by the stage. However it is quite hard to find a place to see the stage on the camped main floor. The balcony is great if you want to see what is on stage however it's packed!
- Pros: space, balcony
- Cons: location, space
Rumble at the Roseland was a blast!
by NotoriousKelly
I've been to MMA events in arenas that were more comfy, but they don't have the hometown feel of the Roseland.
This was my first FCFF event, and they kept the fights coming and didn't lose our attention at all.
Plenty of crowd enthusiasm and other emotions ;)
The A/C is stronger on the floor than up above but, if even a big ol fat dude like me is comfy-it wasn't too warm up top, and the view is great!
My last outing here was Patton Oswalt's comedy which also rocked.
At Patton's show they had a license scanner (which didn't thrill me for privacy reasons) but it was still pretty slow to get i.d. checked for upstairs access.
Although I'm a smoker, the non-smoking policy is welcome.
The sights, sounds, smells and emotion of this smaller venue will bring fond memories for many years.
The area is a little sketchy if you haven't 'been around', otherwise it's fairly tame.
I'll be back for more events at the Roseland.
- Pros: Quick pace of fights, lotta matches for the $$$
- Cons: Long wait to get thru i.d. check, $34 a bit stiff for SRO
Security is brutal!
by ahimsamonkey
My (sober) self slipped on the beer-covered stairs leading down to the main level and almost had my arm pulled out of its socket by the aggressive, surly security guard. I will never see another show here!
- Cons: Like visiting a fascist state
DO NOT GO HERE!! HORRIBLE SECURITY & STAFF, SKETCHY LOCATION
by aRose
Security did NOTHING to help my brother who got attacked right outside. They watched and did nothing!!! He was seriously injured! They lied to him and said they called the cops, but they didnt. The cop WE called said that the Roseland is a terrible place, and they will avoid calling the cops at any and all costs. The staff are a bunch of a*holes and are terribly mean!!! The area is super sketchy and I will never go back there. I have been 3 times and have had a bad experience each time, so thats it. They may have good bands, but it isnt worth it! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! DO NOT SUPPORT THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Pros: They bring in good music, but its NOT worth it
- Cons: HORRIBLE SECURITY & STAFF, SKETCHY LOCATION
Great Show! Don't act like an idiot!
by DRPhibes1
Just saw Blondie and the band was GREAT!
I've read many reviews of the Roseland, and a lot were negative so I was a little bit aprehensive. The staff seemed friendly enough to myself and my girlfriend, but we are not the kind of people to cause problems. Although I did get a stern warning to stop taking pictures on my cell phone, I was ok with that, got 4 crappy pictures that were not worth getting thrown out for...
Viewing some people act like jerks and seeing a quick response by the staff was cool with me. If you go to a show, why do you want to act like an idiot and do stupid stuff to get you thrown out of a place anyway? Enjoy the show, get your drink on, dance, scream, etc...
My girlfriend did see someone in the bathroom getting ready to do a I.V. slam-a-jam, kinda creepy! Maybe they could of fixed themselves up before they walked in? If that person would of got caught, and recieved a boot out the door, they probally would have been the one to write a crappy review once the came back from the i.v. fog.
Drinks are a little spendy, but that's what its like at every concert.
Deborah Harry sounded great, the band sounded great, and the opening act was some local gal that sounded good as well.
I will definataly plan to see more bands at the Roseland and paying for the upper deck as worth it as well, cause the bar was right behind me!
- Pros: Old bands get new life!
- Cons: iv use in bathroom
Treated Poorly By Staff
by Presentnow
I won't attend a show at the Roseland again. I had a seat upstairts in the balcony with some friends and my spouse. I left my seat to use the restroom. When I tried to return to my seat I was told I could not go back upstairs. I explained I needed to get back to my group, but they didn't give a rip. I was very irritated!!! Are you serious? I stood by the stairs then not knowing how I was going to find my group when the show was over. After 15 minutes or so of me standing there they finally let me go upstairs? What the ??
In Case of Fire, Beware
by mywildchild
so, I would hate to be in this joint if there was a fire... Exiting after the show was a b**ch.
but all in all it was a pretty good venue for the show. Flogging Molly played to the hilt and the closeness was very much like I remember good shows in the early to mid 90's at many other venues in town.
Never went to the bathroom or to get a drink (had a kid with me and it just wasn't prudent to leave him to go do either of those things) so I can't speak to those aspects...
But security was a breeze and I don't have any complaints about staff or other things.
- Pros: good sound and fun crowd
- Cons: crowded
avoid at all costs
by nessamonster
The show was good, the band was amazing, however the people that ran the place were absolute jerks for no apparent reason. We called in regards as to when to show up for the show, the message that we got said that the doors open at 8, the bands start at 9. When we got there the band we bought tickets for were already playing, when we asked the ticket taker why the band was already playing she said the doors opened at seven, the bands started at eight. When I asked why the phone message said otherwise she said I had a shi**y attitude, I moved forward to see the band. My friend behind me moved forward to get her tickets as well, and the ticket taker said "Your friend has a shi**y attitude, she's a bi*ch." To which my friend said "that's your opinion" Then the employee rolled her eyes. All we did was ask what time the show was supposed to start, she had to put us down. We asked politely why there was a difference in time, we weren't rude, but we were immediately put down. We understand that the place was busy, but we didn't expect that kind of attitude. We didnt' let it ruin the show, Dragonforce was amazing, but I would not go to that venue again. I didn't pay thirty dollars to be called a bi*ch.
- Cons: The staff was really unpleasant for no reason.
Great Venue for Shows....BUT
by 10gear
I think that this is a GREAT venue to watch shows, good acoustics, is relatively small (in a good way) provides a little more 'intimate' feel with the artists. It's cool that it's all ages but that they have 2 bars (upstairs and downstairs) BUT the BARTENDERS are the WORST!! Mainly, the ones downstairs, in the 1st floor bar. They look like washed up old groupies who never moved on and made anything of their lives and being a bartender in a concert venue is the highest of aspirations they ever reached. For some reason, which I still cannot understand, they powertrip from their position as bartenders (sad, i know). You would think that all those years wasted behind the bar would teach you how to make a decent long island, but i guess not. Also the fact that both bars are cash-only is definitely a con. So from now on when I go to the roseland, I pre-funk before and get there good n' ready so I dont have to deal with those losers. I suggest you do the same.
- Pros: Good acoustics, good size venue
- Cons: Staff
