Too bad

by Novak

Snobby wait staff. Slow service. Food not very good. Way over priced. Its too bad because this could be a great little place if they got rid of all the egos and worked on improving the quality of the food.. No one i know even goes there anymore and we all live near by.

  • Pros: Clean bathrooms
  • Cons: Prices, service, food, wait staff.

Ehh... Not So Much!...

by songbird092980

After reading mixed reviews of this place I decided to see for myself if it was an adequate restaurant. I work in the area so it's always nice to find another place to go for lunch. So I went here on a Monday early afternoon, I was greeted and handed a menu for a to-go order. Service seemed acceptable, decor was mediocre, sort of a cluttery theme.. Nonetheless, I was there for the food. I ordered a chicken enchilada with refried beans and spanish rice. I also got a side of chips and salsa. The wait for brief, my food was ready in about 7 minutes, suspiciously fast for a special order. The food was slightly above room temperature, and tasted very cheap. The beans were thick and looked old. The spanish rice had an odd seasoning and tasted very far from authentic. The worst part of all was the cheap cheap cheap chicken that they claimed was breast meat was nothing more than spongy fatty cheap chicken pieces that looked like something you would find in a frozen dinner. I have had better chicken at Mcdonalds for $2.00. Inside of my enchilada was traces of olives....?? Not sure if this was a part of the ingredients or if they just somehow sneaked into my food, it sure wasn't on the description in the menu. Yuck!

It is absurd that this restaurant is actually charging restaurant prices for food that is so cheap. I paid $12.00 alone for my plate of food, not to mention the $3.00 extra for the stale chips and salsa. Who would actually eat here and then come back a second time? I don't see what would bring anyone back here unless they are very desperate for food. This place reminds me of the hole in the wall cheap 24 hour mexican restaurants you could find on 82nd Ave. But at least at those 24 hour places they charge appropriate prices for the low quality of food.. Outside of that, I will never return nor will I suggest this to any of my hotel guests that come to our downtown hotel.

  • Pros: Courteous Service
  • Cons: Everything else!!!

Long time favorite!!

by bmarkillie

Don't get some of the reviews...? There is a parking lot behind the building and the food is anything but bland! Guess if you order a cheese quesadilla with refried beans it might be bland. This place has some of the best salsa around, waitresses are friendly and you can't find a stronger margarita if you tried. The house ones might not be great "quality" but they are great "quantity". Huge tequilla list if you want a better brand for a couple bucks more. I eat here at least twice a week and its always good. Definately not "authentic taco cart mexican" but then again, it doesn't claim to be. Great and affordable...in NW Portland - go figure.

  • Pros: Great portions, strong margaritas, SALSA, parking
  • Cons: not "authentic" mexican, sometimes loud

Decent American-Mexican food

by daveypdx

It's somewhat like a high-end Taco Bell, with a bar. Great staff, and the food has a good flavor, but is not in the style someone who has eaten in Ensenada or Mexico City would expect. The margaritas are good (and generous!), and the chips and salsa are a great bonus. (The rice is better with some salsa blended in.)

They also have a good supply of commercial hot sauces available, and the portion sizes are great for the price. The only parking is on street, which is a problem for some. If you can walk a block you'll find enough though.

If you like Tequila, check out the bar. They have a very good selection, and keep the prices comparable to other places in NW Portland.

  • Pros: Good food, drinks, staff
  • Cons: Dining area seating and decor

Fabulous drinks, food and service. Friendly atmosphere. Stiff beverages. Heaping portions. Chips and Salsa complimentary waiting at your table. Great place. No frills here, just good drink, food and company.

Worst of the worst

by henryadam

This is the worst, most vile tex-mex that anyone could come across anywhere. maybe the bar is it's selling point?? the chile rellenos that i had were saugy. the food was of poor quality and had zero flavour. don't ever eat at this place. the service was fine, the food was not.

  • Pros: service
  • Cons: very very bad food

love those enchilada moles

by easl

i wandered in here while on a business trip. i liked the unpretentious atmosphere, even though i was in a business suit with the latest 'it' bag. i ordered a beer and some gucamole to start. the guac kind of fizzed in my mouth, so i figured it was off. to their credit, they replaced it but i still didn't feel like there was a lot of flavor in the second, greener batch. i ordered an enchilada/tamale combo and was impressed with all the different fllings you could get with the enchilada. i chose the chicken mole and it was good. the beef tamale was good, too. i thought the beans that came with it were odd. they seemed like they had combined a can of refried beans with a can of whole beans, and tried to pass it off like it was homeade. the rice was good with a sort of rechopped look and nutmeg flavor. all in all, i think this is a solid value for the money.

  • Pros: wait staff and chicken enchilada moles
  • Cons: none really

Burly Tex-Mex fare served with little attitude at a Northwest neighborhood dive.

by Contributor

In Short
Most visitors come here with one goal: drinking with a side of food. The kitschy decor won't excite, but the tables hold gargantuan heaps of food and harbor strong, fruity margaritas.

Would Never Go Back

by cissella

I dined here in September 2005 while visiting Portland from Los Angeles. The restaurant was just down the street from our hotel, so we gave it a shot. The rice was inedible, the "refried" beans tasted like baked beans from a can, and the chile relleno was soggy. The salsa was the only decent food item served. The service wasn't awful, but considering that we were one of two tables in the restaurant, it seemed a little slow.

I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone.
