Very pleasant meal, though building needs A/C
by aymazing at Citysearch
I visited Papa Haydn's westside location with 3 friends, 2 of whom were from out of town. We chose Papa Haydn as an upscale restaurant with superior desserts, and that exactly what we got. Three of us ordered Caesar salads (2 salmon, 1 chicken), and all were enjoyed. The only downside was the overcooked salmon, but the flavor was still delicious. The salads were served whole-leaf, which I don't prefer as it makes it harder to eat. The fourth friend ordered the halibut and seemed to enjoy it. 2 friends shared the dessert sampler, which came with ample portions of 5 desserts that looked perfect for 2-3 people. We also ordered a Boccone Dolce and Baked Alaska, each of which was perfect. We started with cocktails (Raspberry Lemondrops and Barbarita), and all were delicious and perfect for the sweltering evening. The service was excellent, with our server being friendly and engaging. My only complaint is the heat in the building. The outside temp during our visit was in the mid-90s, and the restaurant must have been in the 80s. Although not completely unbearable, the heat did put a damper on an otherwise excellent meal.
- Pros: Great drinks, very good food, fantastic desserts, very good service
- Cons: Temperature in building
Best dessert in town!

My partner and I have been here many times to enjoy their delicious desserts and people watch at the outside tables. Always busy and always worth it! Great service and great dessert selections. Haven't tried their dinner menus, but the dessert is always worth a visit!
- Pros: wonderful cakes and custards
- Cons: long waits
good service

I went with a friend for dinner and we had great service. we weren't rushed. the waitress did her job promptly and well. she had shorter blonde hair, but i don't remember her name. I had a raspeberry chocolate dessert and wine, and my friend had dinner and wine. I wanted to write this comment after reading a few others about poor service. what were the people expecting when their party was at the bar across the street and had 1 person holding their table. how long were they really over there. would you like the hostess to hold a table for 4-6 people with only one person sitting there for how really knows how long. this place is very busy. make a reservation or be prepared to wait. don't plan to sit there all night either talking. just spend a reasonalbe amount of time there and then move on to the next place or go on a walk down 23rd.
great service papa haydens and great desserts. thank you for always keeping the seating full.
Good Dessert Place

I have only tried the lunch menu several times, and the food, while good, didn't leave a lasting impression. The desserts, however, are different and decadent. I almost feel guilty strolling into this place in the late hours just to devour a slice of buttermilk chocolate cake, but the guilt soon subsides. Skip the meal and come here for dessert and wine. A bit of clarification: 5 stars for dessert; overall is 4 stars.
GREAT Service!!!

Went in for an after dinner drink and something for the sweet-tooth and boy was I impressed. Our waiter Jacob, was one of the most professional waiters I've ever been served by. He was very educated on the menu, suggesting we try the banana cream pie. He also was able to recommend a very nice scotch to wash down our tasty treat. We enjoyed a piece of their homemade new york style cheesecake as well. Everything was delicious. We will be going back soon for sure.
A great experience for me and the "mama" at Papa Haydn.
- Pros: the service (jacob)
- Cons: a little pricy

Although reservations aren't accepted, you can have a cocktail or glass of wine in Jo-Bar next door after you put your name on the list. Most people seem to come for the deserts, so waiting for a dinner table doesn't take long, and they'll come get you when there's an availability. I tried the Gnocchi with Shitake Mushrooms and balsamic vinegar. It was delicious. My date had the ravioli stuffed with potato and cheese, which I tasted and found not too impressive. It had artificial bacon flavor and you couldn't taste the cheese at all. It's a very lively place, so go to have fun with a group of friends. If you want romance however, I'd try a smaller place with better lighting. Papa Haydn's has fairly bright lighting. We didn't try the destert, but you may want to. Apparently that's what they're famous for.
- Pros: 23rd Street charm, Nice Staff
- Cons: , no reservations, loud
Exquisite Desserts / Crowded

The Portland faithful tend to be dedicated to this place as the posh, trendy place to be for the perfect after meal option. Good for dinner and for dates, this is the place to be.
- Pros: Desserts, Location
- Cons: , Crowded, Service
Desserts!!!

While entertaining out of town guests, I decided to try Papa Haydn. I had heard a lot of positive things about the restaurant and it's famous desserts. The botton line is that the Papa Haydn lives up to it's reputation of great desserts. Parking could be much better, but the location is in a fun upbeat area. The only down side to our visit was the fact that they were not able to accomodate a dish for everyone in our party. One of our guests is a Vegan and Papa Haydn was not able to create something. However, besides that the desserts make up for eveything!
A Solid Experience

My main complaint with this restaurant is that parking is impossible, but it's impossible for everything else in the area, and I knew what I was getting into, so how much can I complain?
I came mid-afternoon, so getting a table was very easy, although I've heard of long waits. The service was good, but not incredibly so.
The entrees were good and wholesome, but simple. I have no complaints because they were priced very fairly for what they were. We shared two desserts, a boccone dolce and a fleur de lys. The former was excellent, but the latter was just OK.
- Pros: dessert, peoplewatching
- Cons: impossible to park
Skip the Cake!
by SheaMac at Citysearch
Some of the most delicious goodies I've ever eaten! Enough to satisfy almost any sweet tooth. However, you might want to skip the cakes. I prefer moist, rich cakes. PH's tend to be on the dry side. Very dissapointing. Also, I find the hours rather inconvenient (particularly on Sunday), and it is often crowded.
- Pros: Yummy desserts, Great atmosphere, good price
- Cons: Poort hours, low quality cakes, often crowded
