AWFUL, MEAN, RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE
by sbrambo at Citysearch
Here's the deal. I went into this place for a long time because they serve a good pie. I will never go in there again due to an experience I had fairly recently. After I got my slice I tipped $1.00. It slid in a gap between the two counters where you pay. The person behind the counter said to me, "you know what we call that?" I replied with a smirk thinking that it was no big deal. The person replied "a dumb f@#k/" You people who work their make a great product. Maybe in the future you should hold back on your themed NY attitude that you may think is cute in this city, but I hope your pizza place doesn't do well in the future because your customer service is seriously lacking!
rude rude rude. bad service, didn't even get to order
by mtuckra at Citysearch
So, I called to order 2 pizzas for myself and some friends for pickup. The guy was extrememly rude off the bat. I asked him if they had any specialty pizzas; greek, veggie, meatlover style, whatever. He said "what do you want?" "Um, do you have any specialties" I asked again. "I heard that you guys make awesome pizza." His response was, "Look we offer the basic toppings. Call back when you know what you want." We had been on the phone for less than 30 seconds. Well I wanted a sausage, peperroni, and mushroom, along with a Cheese pizza, but I guess I shouldn't have been so rude to ask what they offered. I drove to Zupans and picked up 3 delicious frozen pizzas which I spiced up with some fresh veggies. The cashier was nice, the pizza was great, and I probably spent less anyhow. Skip this joint!
- Pros: none
- Cons: rude, unpleasant, unhappy people
Grease Bomb
by thehottestguyever at Citysearch
In short, Domino's has better pizza. No, rephrase that: Anywhere has better pizza. Unless you like your pizza so grease soaked that you can hardly discern what the toppings are, I would recommend you spend your money elsewhere. I have been dragged into this restaurant on multiple occasions, each being just as miserable as the other. Bad food, bad atmosphere, bad food.
- Pros: Cheap.
- Cons: Bad food.
not at all what NY pizza tastes like.... yuck!
by hotpink321 at Citysearch
I just copied/pasted this review which describes my experience to a T. I, too, lived in NY for a while. NYC pizza is AMAZING, and when I moved to NW 23rd I was estatic that there was a pizzeria with NY style pizza. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. Rude workers and really gross pizza. When they say "Escape from NY Pizza" they really mean get as far away from NY pizza as you can. I only live a stone's throw away, but I'll never go back.
"I grew up going to NYC pizzerias so when I moved out here I was REALLY excited about this place. What a huge disappointment! I hated putting up with the stupid attitude which isn't really authentic, New Yorkers are brusque but not jerks and I found that the slice wasn't heated through enough, the sauce had a nasty, bitter taste and the cheese was just okay. Skip this place, it's not worth the time."
- Pros: its proximity to other (and better) restaurants
- Cons: terrible pizza, dirty interior, bad service
ESCAPE from NY, as quickly as possible
by gingerman at Citysearch
I grew up in Brooklyn and Staten Island. That being said, I'm reasonably tolerant of "NY style pizzarias" that claim to have the real thing. THIS PLACE IS AWFUL. If you want a soggy mess of a pie that has 10 times as much cheese as it should, and half as much sauce, and an obnoxious staff to boot- then you've found your place. In fact I can't even call this stuff pizza... cheesy cracker bread might be a better category. If the owners actually Escaped from NY, they did so because NYers won't tolerate this kind of nasty pizza. If you're looking for NY style pizza, go to the any one of the Pizzicato locations. They don't get it exactly right, but then again they don't claim to either
- Pros: none
Proficient Restaurant Professional, Top
by ajlc2552 at Citysearch
Was not able to enjoy this pizza because of first, just plain lack of interest behind the counter about customer, it seemed I had to cater to them, order the right slice or beer, they were so rude and simplistic, second, pizza is not that good, why don't they deep dish it with some semi-professionalism, it might help it go down. They lost my business the first time I was there, but tried again, then slipped on some mistakenly placed and ignorantly imitated New York attitude. Never to return.
- Pros: they cannot , make me, eat there
- Cons: wasted prime, location for , good another eatery
where's the exit sign?
by cyan at Citysearch
I loved Escape From NY in San Francisco (run by the brother) but the pizza in Pdx sucked big time, flavorless, dull, boring (the only redemption is the crust). What really annoyed me is the psuedo NY attitude crap the owner puts out. The pie is not worth it. If I wanted that kind of BS I'd go to a Dick's Resort or something.
- Pros: it's pizza, thin, crisp crust, it's pizza
- Cons: bad attitude by owner, bland toppings, wussy sauce
Disapointed
by djjjo at Citysearch
With as much as I hear about Escape, I thought it was going to be great pizza. I have to say that my pizza tasted more like it came from the freezer in a grocery store. The crust was bland and the sauce was plain...like it was only made from tomatos with no spices. Not only that but the service was absolutely terrible! I really wonder what the hype is all about.
- Pros: NONE
Don't Insult My Intelligence!!!
by brooklyn_bob at Citysearch
They're lucky to have escaped with their lives from New York if they were serving this crap there. Judging by the many favorable reviews, I can only conclude that Portlanders are "culinary illiterates".
Throw some tomato sauce and melted cheese on something, call it "Italian food" and it will sell in this town. They must think pizza is like wine, the longer it ages the better it gets.
- Pros: It keeps some people, employed.
- Cons: So called NY pizza
Escape From Good Taste
by BronxBoy at Citysearch
I was born and raised in da Bronx, thats NYC for your Portlanders. Escape from NY would be luaghed out of the 5 corners of NYC faster than Kornblats, another piece junk eatery claimng to be New Yorkesque. A pizza without good sauce is worthless and this pizza is just that. It tates like it came out of a jar marked Ragu. What happened to the flavor??? The crust was joke, one bite in it lets you know that you are miles away from a real NY pizza place. I bet everyone here who digs it so much is either an owner or has never been to NYC for real pizza, and please dont go on about the one time you were in NYC for a day and you stopped at a Saburu's..please.
- Pros: It eventualy closes
- Cons: Bad taste, The crust is the pits, NYC? In what reality?
