Sarah at Ziva rocks on with her socks on!
by joydropofsunshine503 at Citysearch
As a person who up until a year ago hadn't gotten a hair cut more frequently than every six months-or-so (emphasis on the 'or so' part) having found ziva and particularly sarah is totally rad. The service is great, they always offer you tea or water as soon as you check in for your appointment, the atmosphere is hip without being too pretentious and annoying and the music generally very good. Sarah always gives me the rockstar treatment using great products on my hair and also taking time to talk with me about what I really want done with my hair. I usually get the "deer-in-headlights" feeling from salons but never once have I felt like that at Ziva. Totally recommend the salon and "my girl" Sarah.
- Pros: It's located close in on the easily accessible NW 23rd ave
- Cons: it's located in the "slow-walkers paradise" NW 23rd ave
My hair belongs to SARAH!
by PositiveHug at Citysearch
From the moment I walk in that store, everything else falls away, because Sarah is dedicated to her clients. The moment you sit in her chair, she gives you her best. She's been at it just under a year, and honestly I wouldn't know it by how well the end results are. She is extremely attentive and friendly and I have never walked away disappointed from her work. I like to give my support to new people when trying out a new salon when I have moved someplace, and she is worth every penny because you get zero attitude and is someone you can collaborate with and will work to make her clients satisfied. She is type of stylist that is the reason why in the beauty industry you become loyal. I trust her judgement completely and her confidence doesn't come across as arrogance.
Before she and I decide that my hair is "done" not only do we look at it from all possible angles, but try out a few different possible techniques in styling before adding a final finishing product. She wants you to be happy, and every time I have left happy, and relaxed.
Go girl!
- Pros: An extremely sweet, friendly stylist.
UNEVEN!!!
by pickle13 at Citysearch
I thought i would be getting a great haircut here, i asked for someone with experience cause my hair is hard to deal with. they made my appointment with a Designer II and she did a horrible job. I asked for a long A-line style and not much off the front and now i pretty much have a "bob," the back is uneven and slightly longer then the front and this is after our 20 minute consultation! not to mention i paid $55.00 and my hair looked so horrible the way she styled it i had to go home and wash it before my dinner party that evening-waste of money and time!!
I'm not trying to put anybody down, I know we all have bad days sometimes, but I myself am a hairstylist and never would i rush my client out of the chair w/o them being 100% happy! conversation is not everything!!
I think this salon is VERY over rated, with a very young staff that needs more experience at least for the price they charge and the location. I should of left there looking and feeling great instead i regret-ed every minute of it.
- Pros: not many...i guess good conversation
- Cons: over priced-quick-little experience
Lousy and Uninspired Managers
by 30MinutesABlink at Citysearch
I can say first off that I have been a client of this salon for awhile until today. The stylist that I have been seeing is wonderful, but I feel sorry for anyone working there having to deal with these young 20 year old managers from the suburbs who's attitudes drip off them like their tanning bed tans (not to mention mystic tan upkeeps) they seem to flaunt when rudely giving "feedback" to their staff for any reason whatsoever (Glad you graduated from beauty school girlfriend, but obviously they didn't offer an "anti-snatch" course for customer service, of which you horribly fail) so if the public gets to see their "wonderful management skills" as a paying customer, I can only imagine how the stylists are treated behind the scenes. I feel sorry for anyone having to work in an atmosphere like that, because the stylists are employees and not renting their own stations, which would give them some edge over their managers. No one should be subject to rudeness like that and your customers especially do not need to witness a reprimand publicly. The manager fops here fail horribly, and I will not be returning for ahwhile and I encourage anyone else who has witnessed such behaviour to report the same. I know for a fact that the owner isn't a cosmetologist, he is just a business owner....maybe he needs to spend more time with managers in training them.
As for service from the stylists, I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with the two that I have had. When it comes to coming in on a beautiful day like today after doing a little shopping and having lunch and getting a lovely welcome from reception, I loved being able to come and be part of the stylists and their creative process. All things aside, I would be lying if I said that the stylists were not the best I have found in the city. The prices are worth it to me because I feel lovely when I leave, and I know that on the creative side you cannot get nicer and friendlier and enthusiastic staff.
Sad business that cannot be uplifted by product, wonderful stylists, music and atmosphere of decor. Do yourselves a favor and improve management.
- Pros: Love the location, the products and stylists.
- Cons: Rude management
Elle Garland is the greatest!!
by someawesomename at Citysearch
Elle is an awesome stylist! She's been doing my hair for years and I wouldn't see anyone else. I have wavy hair that's not easy to cut and she always does exactly what I want without much explanation. And she's great with bangs! She isn't afraid to try new things, and knows what kind of hairstyle looks good for different face shapes. Elle also did color for a friend of mine and it looked phenomenal.
Plus, the Bumble and Bumble products that Ziva carries are fantastic :)
- Pros: Elle and great products
- Cons: Parking...if you drive
Received best haircuts ever here!
by Olive85 at Citysearch
Every haircut I have received here I have loved. My sister and I go to her regularly and personally, I have always had a good experience. The staff is always friendly - in person and on the phone. Emily makes her recommendations but always goes with what I want (which is usually her suggestion since I always love her ideas). She isn't afraid to try new ideas/techniques, and there is no pressure to buy product either. And I do like how before and after the cut/color, the stylist sits and looks you in the eyes - not through the mirror. It made me uncomfortable at first because I wasn't used to it. But I like it now since it makes me feel that she is actually looking at me and listening to what I want, instead of playing with my hair and thinking what they want to do (which is how I have felt at other salons).
- Pros: Emily Natale - awesome stylist
- Cons: The parking (or lack there of) in NW makes me ill.
Great atmosphere, stylists, and products! Emily is the BEST!
by ptownjenn0910 at Citysearch
I have been going to Ziva for about a year now and Emily has been my stylist from day one. The thing I love the most is that Emily loves to work with my ever changing mood with my hair. My cut and/or color is different everytime! It makes it fun and she is encouraging in my thoughts and helps me define what the look is that I want. She is quick, thorough, and above all GOOD at what she does! She takes the time to explain the different products she uses and how they benefit you and my styling process at the end of my appointment is always different. This helps give me ideas on how to do my hair! Beyond just Emily, Ziva is a fun place to get your hair done.. Although its a little small everyone is very friendly and really pay attention to you. The products are great with a large variety.
- Pros: Attentive stylists, variety of products, funky atmosphere
- Cons: location (hard to park around 23rd)
New Yuko Star at Ziva!
by kozmic at Citysearch
This past Autumn, many of Portland's Yuko clients were frantic to learn that Ziva's very own Kristoffer, super best Yuko dude in Portland, was departing Ziva for the East coast. Over the past 2 months, as I kept staring at my 4 inches of emerging silver frizz, I wrung my hands, read tons of on-line reviews about other Yuko trained stylists in Portland but remained paralized by intertia and fear of a 'blind date' with an unknown, chemical welding stylist. My fear of the unknown included the new Yuko stylist at Ziva as well. But, at least I knew that she had enjoyed the opportunity of working with Kristoffer prior to his departure. So, I called Joe Snell, owner and manager, and explained my fears;...broken hair, burned head and escalated cost due to less experienced technician working slower (Kris was VERY quick and productive). He was terrific. Invited me in to visit with Devon so that I would be familiar wih her prior to making a commitment and assured me my cost would remian the same as prior times. Devon was a delight to visit with. She was so attentive and knowledgable about the process I booked that day and had my appointment today. The Great news is that she is EXCELLANT! Listened to my feedback about what worked best with my unique silver hair. VERY professional in her dress and delivery of service... and best of all, she did a SUPERB job on my hair... After 5 years of Yuko, I know when it's done well (one really horrible experience before coming to Kris).. So if you're needing reassurance about Ziva's new Yuko expert... I'm happy to report DEVON BLACK gets 5 Stars....
- Pros: Really attentive staff
- Cons: parking

Lucky you. She cut my hair so uneven and did some type of razor cut on my hair that makes my ends looked split and fried.
