This is the burger that Portland has bragged about for years?
by AnnieMadison at Citysearch
I could have tolerated the smoke, the tacky atmosphere and the sticky table if the burger had been as good as I have heard for years. The bread fell apart before I was able to take a second bite. I guess I expected the meat itselft to be something spectacular. It was dry which made it difficult for the other ingredients to compliment it. I won' t be going there again.
The messiest but not the best
by royreel at Citysearch
I read the hype in the Oregonian one day about Portland?s Best Hamburger at Stanich's on Freemont. I was excited to try it and I did yesterday, I was very disappointed. However it can be said that it is Portland?s messiest hamburger. The fries we good, fresh not frozen. If you want THE BEST hamburger go to any Burgerville, their shakes are supreme as well as the Walla Walla Sweet Onion Rings.
So just skip Stanich?s and head straight to Burgerville.
Lost it's Touch

The past four to five time's I've gone to Stanich's I've been disappointed. I use to love their Bo-burgers, but they don't move my taste buds the way they use to. I don't know if it's new beef, or what, but I'm no longer buying into the hype -- just another burger.
fun place, times change
by kracky at Citysearch
this old school tavern is a wood panelled trove of greasy pennants and mediocre food. FUN then, probably FUN now if you can get past the tasteless meat and cheese, the unsalted, burnt fries. enjoy the fade.
- Pros: people having fun, wood panelling!
- Cons: bad burger, change fryer grease
pull the plug on tradition
by osiris420 at Citysearch
This place may be a NE Portland landmark, but that doesn't give it the right to be voted "best burger". Highly overrated! The fries are mostly burned and greasy (is it that hard to make good fries? I do better at home!), and the burgers are nothing special.
The atmosphere is a mix of hunting lodge and tavern. Time to close down and rethink the future of this establishment.
- Pros: walking distance
- Cons: smoking, grease
Number 1? PUHLEEZE.
by fierydrunk at Citysearch
The minute I arrived in Portland from Memphis, TN nearly three years ago, I asked around for the best burger. In Memphis, we have Huey's addictions--Huey's makes HAND-FORMED, HUGE patties grilled to order in all of their restaurants. While the atmosphere there can be rather annoying, they were always game to make to go orders. Anyway, back to Stanich's. I finally forced my vegetarian boyfriend to go with me to watch me eat one of these famous hamburgers. And I haven't gone back since. WHAT A LETDOWN! The pattie was just like the kind you can buy in bulk at Costco, the cheese was crap Velveeta...it was greasy but only because the grill and the entire restaurant has layers of grease coating every surface, not fresh juices from a good piece of meat. For burgers, this place is a JOKE. I am still searching for anything close to number one!
- Pros: Atmosphere, service, decor
- Cons: hamburger, unclean
Over-rated/Over-priced
by mccullough38 at Citysearch
We ate at Stanich's twice and think it is way over rated- A & W drive-in at the Riddle exit on 1-5 in way better as is a little Mom and Pop drive-in in Washougal Wa
- Cons: expensive, not very clean
uh, CHECK PLEASE
by tree_people at Citysearch
oh come ON, Portland ~ this place is simply a working-class DIVE filled with LOSERS. The burger is skimpy, store-bought and distinguished only by the CHOPPED PICKLE RELISH fill-in for geniune beef. That this, this... EMBARRASSMENT is listed Numero Uno here must be some kind of "in-joke" where Portlanders are sending newly-arrived Californians way the hell out to this crappy old BAR to eat some crappy old BAR-FOOD BURGER.
- Pros: TV is ALWAYS ON !, security cam parking!, NO WAITING!!!
- Cons: FOOD, AMBIENCE, did I say, "FOOD" ?
great burger, dirty restaurant
by praesepe at Citysearch
Oh man, this burger was good, but I nearly left because as I sat there waiting for my food I started looking at all the flags on the wall, and how dusty and dirty they were---ewww. Why is a dirty restaurant worth going to for anybody? I sure wouldn't live in such a dirty place, and I'm not going to eat there (anymore). Too bad, good food.
- Pros: burgers, service, beer selection
- Cons: dust, dirty, not clean
World's greatest WHAT?
by bpdeleon at Citysearch
It's quite a stretch from the mediocre burger I had to "The World's Greatest." The food was not great, and fairly cold, most likely due to the agonizingly slow service. New continents rise from the ocean floor in less time than it took to get my food. It is best not to use their restrooms, either. Stanich's is highly over rated, and something of a let-down. Too bad, because it could be much better with a little effort.
- Pros: Not too expensive., Not crowded.
- Cons: Dirty., Glacialy slow service, Food isn't great.
