Cold Food, AGAIN!!. We went on Thanksgiving day and had to wait 1.5 HOURS AFTER OUR RESERVATION TIME for our food. Then the food was mediocre at best! Some manager came around and asked us if it was ok, and we said we were disappointed, and the mgr didn't seem to care! I said something to the waitress and the waitress told us that they have a hard time keeping mgrs and that they were all new and inexperienced and hadn't worked a major holiday before at rheinlander. Then to top it all off, we picke rheinlander specifically to hear singing and music and we didn't even see a musician (we like the heavy set blonde guy) let alone hear any singing. I guess the new mangament has it under control! We won't go back!

UDATE:

I said we won't go back, but we thought we would give them a try again thinking it was a bad night, WRONG!!!!!

Went there on 12/23/10

had reservations for 7pm, didn't get seated till 7:45, didn't bring fondue until after we ordered, food came @ 8:30, cold, schnitzles were so dark we thought they were burned. fav accordion player wasn't there again (short, heavy blonde guy) mgmt apperently cut his hours to 1 night a week. In an economy where restaraunts are competeing for $$$$, I will take my german dinner $$ to Otto & Anita's. The food is always good, it is operated by the owners (Mom & Dad cook, daughter waits tables) only problem is no accordion player. maybe the guy from Rheinlander should go there....  View Less

Great Austrian/German Style Food!. The Rheinlander is one of the top five restaurants in Portland, in my estimation. I have never had such good wienerschnitzel or fondue as at Der Rheinlander, and their shpatzle is tops, too. I've had slightly better bratwurst (at The Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT), but overall, the Rheinlander has everyone else in its class beaten. The Mozart Cafe in Leavenworth, WA isn't even close. GREAT environment!  View Less View More

Even vegans have options.. I went to the Rheinlander with my company which was dining there for an annual event. I was expecting a lot of meat and cheese and animal fat which there totally was. I've been a very strict vegetarian (vegan) for over 10 years I figured that I'd be just be eating a dinner salad. To my surprise my job had let the Rheinlander know that I'm vegan so they made up a meal for me. I have to admit it was weird but I'm not very picky about vegetables. It was fried sweet potatoes which were breaded and then covered in mushrooms. They used olive oil instead of butter. The mushrooms were amazing. The waitress explained the entire plate of food to me in detail. I'm sure they make much better food when you order off the regular menu but I liked what I had. They met and exceeded my needs.  View Less View More

Wow, are we spoiled here in Portland!!!. Every time my boss comes to town from New York he wants to go here, I think last time he went twice. What great food at reasonable dinner prices! I love the fondue!!! Its especially great with the crab or sausages!!! I always get the potato pancakes, they are spiced so well. And who doesn't love a great accordian player? They have several that roam around while you dine! If you tip they will stay at your table and play a song or two.  View Less View More

German Food Done the right way. I have eaten here twice, once for lunch and dinner. Each time everything was very well prepared. The sampler plate gives you a good idea about German food. The cheese fondue was great.

The selection of beer and wine is quite good. This a fun place to take serveral friends a have a real nice time.  View Less

Great for late night. I keep reading all these reviews about how noisy the atmosphere is with a lot of singing... I've never experienced this! I like Rheinlander quite a lot, my boyfriend gets off work quite late on weekends and they're open til 12 so we come in for the happy hour fondue (with sausage, yes!) and drinks. Very good beer, and for some reason I can't get enough of their sandwiches. All the food is top notch. The service has always been friendly and attentive, with the exception of one waiter who when I came in with a 4 of my (albeit younger, but well over 21) looking friends, studied each of our IDs for at LEAST a minute each. Kind of made me feel like some sort of criminal, and its awkward sitting there waiting for your ID back that long. Anyway... other than that, if you don't like the daytime/evening noise, come after 9! Great food and ambiance!  View Less View More

Great German Cuisine. I was reading other reviews of The Rheinlander and couldn't help notice that dsnichole said as a CON that it was to far away. My wife and I commute from Seattle when we want real German food. We usually make a weekend of it , but have been known to do a turnaround just for dinner. Had our Anniversary dinner there a couple of years ago and the music and food were just great. Probably one of the only German Restuarants to use real Veal in their Schnitzel.  View Less View More
