I have eaten here twice, once for lunch and dinner. Each time everything was very well prepared. The sampler plate gives you a good idea about German food. The cheese fondue was great. The selection of beer and wine is quite good. This a fun place to take serveral friends a have a real nice time.

Pros: Just really good food

Cons: Sometimes noisy

I keep reading all these reviews about how noisy the atmosphere is with a lot of singing... I've never experienced this! I like Rheinlander quite a lot, my boyfriend gets off work quite late on weekends and they're open til 12 so we come in for the happy hour fondue (with sausage, yes!) and drinks. Very good beer, and for some reason I can't get enough of their sandwiches. All the food is top notch. The service has always been friendly and attentive, with the exception of one waiter who when I came in with a 4 of my (albeit younger, but well over 21) looking friends, studied each of our IDs for at LEAST a minute each. Kind of made me feel like some sort of criminal, and its awkward sitting there waiting for your ID back that long. Anyway... other than that, if you don't like the daytime/evening noise, come after 9! Great food and ambiance!

Pros: Happy hour, good service, good food/beer

Cons: Creepy waiters sometimes...

I was reading other reviews of The Rheinlander and couldn't help notice that dsnichole said as a CON that it was to far away. My wife and I commute from Seattle when we want real German food. We usually make a weekend of it , but have been known to do a turnaround just for dinner. Had our Anniversary dinner there a couple of years ago and the music and food were just great. Probably one of the only German Restuarants to use real Veal in their Schnitzel.

It's a fun environment and great food, the mashed potatoes are awesome (well, all the food is great!) there's music and singing and it's decor is so intense! Great experiences, nothing could keep me away!

This place is great, the atmosphere, the food, everything. The mashed potatoes are great. The fondue is great. I can't say enough good things.

Pros: Great food.

Cons: Just that I live so far from it.

This place is as German as you can get. We enjoy the schnitzel and sausages but the fondue was out of this world!

Pros: lots of seating; good, traditional German cuisine

Cons: out-of-the-way location

This place was such a suprise! Me and my girlfriend went there thinking it was going to be romantic and we expected to have a nice meal. But instead of getting full on the meal we got our fill of accordians...

First let me say that Portland City Search should be ashamed for listing this as a recommeded "romantic" spot for couples. That in of itself set my expectations for something that the Rheinlander is NOT! I would better describe the atmosphere as family style, upscale Elmers or Marie Calendars. So if you are looking for a romatic restaurant this is not the place. Never the less, my husband and I decided the menu looked promising so we decided to stay. Huge mistake! My dish was so over cooked (after waiting and waiting and waiting) that I had to send it back. Bottom line, 1) for the price of the food it should be well prepared- I can't believe the waiter even brought my dish to the table. 2) Great for a soccer team gathering, NOT a romantic date.

The Rheinlander was so fun last night! I took my wife there for our 13th anniversary. She had never been there, and I hadn't been there since a German class field trip about 19 years ago. My wife wasn't too excited about it, which made me nervous, but I remembered it being a neat place, so we went anyway. As soon as we walked it, she started to change her mind. It has a cute decor, and we got a nice little quiet table in a corner. I could have stuffed myself on the complimentary fondue they bring as an appetizer. It was also cool to be able to try the beer/wine samplers. The food was fantastic, and the singing was great. The service was outstanding, and I gave the guy one of the biggest tips I've ever given. My wife and I will definitely go there again sometime.

Pros: Fun Singing Waiters, Great food, Excellent Service

Cons: Little warm inside, ~$18/dinner, , but well worth it

My favorite place in Portland. I've been there at least a half dozen times and have never failed to have a great time. It's an absolutely fun and positive atmosphere where you can't help but have fun. Even if you don't like to sing, it's really nice to see such vibrancy.

Pros: Fun, atmosphere, participatory

Singing servers, big steins of beer and fabulous fondue make this a bustling bit o' Bavaria.  See the full editorial review.
