Great pie, definitely better than most in Portland. And if you have a heart attack from all of the grease you can get to the hospital fast!

We used to order from this place 2-3 years ago. It was never spectacular, but it was good enough. I moved back into the neighborhood recently and called for a delivery. The guy I talked to was a class-A a**hole - the kind of situation where the customer can't win. You can be as nice as possible, but these jerks have an ax to grind and they'll get their knives in. So I almost hung up on the spot, but I needed pizza. It arrived on time, within 45 minutes. I ordered a salad too. The salad was creased and soggy. Scarcely edible. The pizza itself showed some promise. The sauce had a decent flavor to it (there was potential), but the crust was old and cardboard like. They were generous with the toppings, but that still didn't save this lemon of a pizza. Bad service, bad salads, weak crust, mediocre sauce, and little to no care taken in the actual construction of the pie. Another note: All of the 5 star reviews here are by shills. To tell a shill, just look to see how many OTHER reviews they've made. Every 5 star review for American Dream was the only review by that user. C'mon. Lying about the place won't help business, folks. Make a good pizza, hire credible help, and, you know, make an EFFORT. Like I said, this place used to be OK. Now it stinks. I hope their days are numbered. Garbage like this shouldn't be tolerated.

It s pretty simple to understand why this place is still in business: only people staying at the hospital and that are tired of cafeteria food and need a walk would go there. There are simply no other reason why someone would go there twice, go once and you ll understand. Better, go once with a few friends and just laugh at the terrible pizza and service you ll receive. There are tons of excellent pizza joints here in Portland and this one is by far the most disgusting pizza we have ever tested. The employees absolutely don't give a c*ap about the service and how the food taste. Beware!!! do not even mention they have overcharged you!!! They will give you a serious mean look!! Not recommended, Not good, mean service, dirty, someone call shake that manager!! Hope you go out of business!! By the way, the rating system is not working right, if you add up the stars I get an average of 3.6. what gives?
Pros: none
Cons: too many to list

I agree with the other bad reviews. This place is dirty and the pizza tastes old and nasty. I recently walked across the street to order a pizza and have a beer while I waited because my friend just had a baby and was starving. As I had my first sip of beer I began watching and starting getting sick to my stomach. I witnessed 2 employees handling dirty dishes and then making salads. I left my beer and walked out without even remembering if I had paid. Well I didn't and it's a good thing. The only sad part is someone probably got my pizza and I'm sure it tasted bad because come to find out, the reason why half the time their pizza tastes old is because if they have screw ups they leave them in the oven and wait til someone else orders the same one. I decided to drive to Flying Pie and was not dissapointed.

I use to eat American Dream alot when I lived in the NE area. Since moving to SE I probably had it 2-4 times last year. Why? I couldn't tell you because it has gone sooooooooo down hill. I gave it chance after chance but finally gave up. Good thing I did because I was just informed by my good friend who works for the health bureau of Portland that recently American Dream had a big file aganist them after a health inspection. I guess one of the main things was they were caught using a knifr to cut chicken then cutting veggies without washing it. As everyone knows it could make you very sick. Also for the most disgusting of them all which I'm sure happens in alot of places, a employee had blown their nose and then took a pizza out of the oven without washing his hands. Hep C among other things could be spread that way. The weird thing is they knew they were going to have a under cover health personal coming in sometime during the months of Nov-Dec and still didn't seem to care. Obviously the manager is a flake. I hope I don't get my friend in trouble but just say you've been warned.

it's too bad about american dream. . . all it takes for a fire sign to never return, is one bad experience and it's ruined FOREVER! I generally loved this place for pizza. . . but they really started slacking in a major way, and i kept giving them another chance (with my hard earned money!). But what ended our relationship was when they were to deliver a pizza "in 45 minutes or less" (is what the dude told me) and 2.5 hours later we get a COLD nasty pizza that had been sitting around for 2 hours and 15 minutes! So instead of trying to make it right and refund our $ or give us credit for another pizza they simply said they would send the driver back to pick up the pizza!?! WTF!?! So, that was it, and they could really give a s#@t about me and my money. Too bad so sad! So, now I'm loving DOVE VIVI! They have deep-dish cornmeal crust and one pie is about $20 but sooo worth it! they are highly recommended!

I work across the street at the hospital and also use to live in NE so I've had my share of American Dream. All I can say is it's good sometimes but lately it's been bad I moved to SE in mt. tabor area and they don't deliver all the time out there (it's only about 7 miles) well they deliver sometimes and other times they say they won't. That's fine I don't mind. However it's always a coin toss on whether it's going to be decent or not. Don't ever order 30 min before they close b/c I guarentee you will get a old pizza that has been sitting out. I promise. The time before this last time they wouldn't deliver so I went and picked it up crossing my fingers it would be good. Well good thing I looked before I left b/c about a quarter of it had no cheese. The guy was cool and fixed it or at least tried but it didn't really look any different. Then last week I gave it another shot after a late night with friends and a bit of a head ache. To my surprise they delivered and once again it wasn't good. From talking to people (alot from the hospital since people order alot here) you either love it or hate it. I am neither one b/c I have had good pizza there as much as I've had bad pizza. I guess it just depends on how much green the guys have smoked that day. They have always been friendly though. They are just a bunch of stoners. : )

Pizza is bomb, staff think they are in a teeny bopper movie about a bunch of losers who are really in a band and the pizza shop is just their day gig. Tessy rocks, the rest of them can eat sh*t...seriously, shut up more and acknowledge that yes you are 30 and work in a pizza shop, k? But, having said that I love the pizza, the crust is wonderful, the breadsticks are wonderful, best pizza in portland too bad it is served by morons

The pizza is consistently good. The staff are quick, the decor is unique. However, last night, I was disappointed when one of the staff sat down with his friend, and she began bellowing vulgarity as if it were a private residence. Seated next to them were a mom and her young son trying to enjoy a meal. After several trumpets of the f word and other unacceptable verbage, folks from surrounding tables got uncomfortable and left. I was disappointed the nearby staff seemed to shrug it off as nothing, and essentiallly condoned it. I felt uncomfortable for the mom. To be sure, I am not a moral model of any sort, but try using a little discretion with such language and keep it private, or at least quiet. If I were to begin such a dialogue in a public place, I'd expect to be asked to leave, period. Great food, but leave the family at home.
Pros: superb food
Cons: poor crowd with rude manners

I've been eatting here since they first open their door! Never had a bad one - check out the Mary - it's the BEST.
Pros: Awesome food, cool music and good selection of brews - and dig the artwork
Cons: there is no down side to Dreamer!
