Don't wear your coat
by jodilovesryan at Citysearch
Whew it's warm inside. They do have a great rock and wood and nice looking plant selection. Their fish can be a bit pricey to other fish stores. They have like 2 helpful employess that actually seem like they want to help you. Every other employee seems to avoid you like the plague. They do test your water and help with stuff you need. All around pretty good store. More expensive than others.
My favorite fish place
by hod01 at Citysearch
I've fairly new to keeping fish (1 year now) but Wet Spot is my go-to-place. They have a pretty wide range of fish and accessories. The staff are knowledgable.....but lets just say that there's some that are even more knowledgable than others. Both combined to ensure that the fish you're buying are nice and healthy (they have a return policy too).
About the only downside is that the place is incredibly busy. If you're looking for advice/fish it's now unknown to wait 20-30 minutes to get help. Otherwise it's a great store.
- Pros: Experienced staff, great selection, decent prices
- Cons: On a weekend it gets busy and is hard to get served
best f'ing store in the world
by eretmodus at Citysearch
Oh where do i start, with the best selection of freshwater fish in the northwest, possibly in the world, having awesome pieces of wood and rocks to put in your tanks, great prices on captive and wild caught fish also tanks and stands. the place has everything. the customer service is great, but if you want to go in on the weekends, try being a little patient. from what ive seen, they get to everyone as quickly as possible, but some times they can be a little understaffed. so put on that smile and wait patiently, let me tell you its worth the wait. i love andrea, abby, amanda, garrett, and pretty much everyone from there staff. if i have a question, they have the answer, if not they'll find it for me. compared to world of wet pets, kays and the place around the corner, the wet spot is the OG of the fish industry. so keep it real and try out the wet spot. ASK QUESTIONS AND IF YOU BUY FISH, FOR GOD'S SAKE, GIVE THEM A GOOD HOME. fish have feelings, their not just decorations, their living creatures. go vegan.
- Pros: everything
- Cons: its hot
great customer service, best possible fish store

Wet Spot Tropical Fish is the best place to go for fish in Portland. the customer service is great and everything is a great deal! if I could go anywhere for fish it would be the Wet Spot.

- Cons: expensive fish
AWESOME fish, not so awesome employees

I've been coming to the wetspot for many years. I LOVE the selection. The fish are always healthy and reasonably priced. The tanks are well kept too. I'm disappointed in the decreasing selection of plants here. I'm also HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED with the lack of customer service. A few years ago, the staff would at least sort of engage customers. Now, the staff seems apathetic. They are not friendly. They do not greet you. They rarely smile. If the fish weren't so great, I would go somewhere else.
Excelent Fish! Excelent Plants! Excelent Enviornment! So why only 4/5 ?????
by Seanfish at Citysearch
here are three places, (and the only ones might I add) that are local to me.) they are my only opportunity to buy fish. mind you, i have 4 aquariums, a 4 foot long cornsnake (who thinks hes a dog) a 24-26" bearded dragon, and a racoon. (i own the racoon legally if your wondering) i also have two dogs and 3 parakeets.
Petsmart "( sickanddyinganimalsbythesecondstore )"
Petco "( okayservicebuthalfdeadpetstore )"
Extreme marine fish store "( 500marinetanks2freshwatertanksstore )"
so before we went i looked up fish stores in the portland vicinity. I happen to like (as well as most likely, all of you guys do) non-chain, self owned fish stores >ALOT< more than the torturous chain petstores. (i had better wrap this up quick)
"fish works" was closed, wich was our first try, so we went to "the wet spot tropical fish"
PHYSICAL APPEARENCE "enviornment"
from the outside the store seriously lacks lighting, and to me and my possie looked like a coffee shop that used fafrican cichlids as the theme. A nice touch, but in 2 ways deceiving. The inside, as i will get to is amazing in all prospects, and to my appeal has the "warehouse" feeling to it.
PRODUCT(s) / SERVICE
the fish in this store, contrary to petsmart/petco looked so so so so happy! I checked three things. 1, they were obviously very well fed, and i know what im talking about when it comes to feeding animals. The prices were high, but thats reosonable for such healthy and content fish. selection=great!! setup=great!!!
STAFF, HELP / EMPLOYEES
okay, heres why i gave these guys 4/5
they workers acted as if i was wearing a turban and had an M16 strapped to my shoulder.. i found one nice woman who asked if i had Questions, and since i was planning to write them a review, i asked her about the kuhli loaches, and found she knew NOTHING! she knew nothing about any of the fish i asked her about.
OVERALL
VERY GOOD
- Pros: Awesome Selection, Great Quality, Wonderous Enviornment!!
- Cons: A little spendy pricing, but not bad. snobby and unappealing customer service
Great Fish Selection
by llynya at Citysearch
Back when I first got started on fish they helped me big time. They took the time to explain everything to me and helped me through it all. And when I did have a problem it didn't feel like I made a huge mistake and the world was going to end because something was wrong with my tank. (I had a few sales people at different pet store make me feel like I was purposfully doing things wrong and that I was going to murder all my fish.) They have a HUGE selection of fish!! I felt like a kid in a candy store. The people are real nice and helpfull.
- Pros: Wide Selection, Know what they're doing
- Cons: a little pricey at times
Once the best store in Portland, now not so good.

I have been shopping here for a couple years here and have always thought they were the best all around. They have always had slow service, but the tanks looked great and fish were healthy. That and the selection I thought were worth the extra cost. The last three times I have gone in I havent recognized any of the knowlegable staff I was used to. All three times it took almost an hour to make a purchase of one fish I had already decided on due to the unhelpfull nature of the staff, and more importantly, their tanks are looking horrible! Last time I was in there were sick looking or dead fish in a lot of the tanks, and nasty green and black hair algae on everthing in all the tanks! I would still shop there for their great plant and rock selection, but Im not buying any fish from them untill they hire some new people who will help customers and keep the tanks clean.
- Pros: Amazing selection of live plants
- Cons: Consistantly bad service, fish not as healthy as they used to be.
Wondeful Experience!! Relaxing Environment!!
by bethany007 at Citysearch
The whole store is one big relaxation cove. The tanks are well maintained and the fish are all healthy and active. The selection is absolutely amazing!! In all of Portland NOTHING compares to the selection found at the Wet Spot. I have been to many different pet stores and this one tops them all. The staff was helpful, friendly, and willing to work with you.
Also I was amazed that they are willing to take in unwanted fish for various reasons, by appointment. I think that is truly wonderful.
I have met the owner and he is very well knowledged and takes the extra time to explain to you exactly what is going on with your tank, if you are having problems, and does so with such ease that it is apparent he has been working with fish for a very long time. It is also my opinion that good staff stem from good management and from my experience I would definitely say that the Wet Spot has both!!
I would recommend this place to anyone!!
- Pros: Superior Selection and Quality, Great Customer Service and Understanding Staff
AMAZING SELECTION AND WONDEFUL SERVICE!!
by cathy_montel at Citysearch
The Wet Spot has an amazing variety of freshwater fish that are kept in great condition. Many pet stores will sell fish that are sick and not in the best condition but at the Wet Spot they tell you right away if a tank is sick (which is VERY rare there) and they won't let you purchase it until they sure that the fish in that tank are all doing well.
The place is neat, clean and the best part is the wonderful service! It's very refreshing to have the staff know many of their customers by name. The staff is very patient explaining whatever questions you have. The only draw back is that often other customers have many questions so getting help becomes tough when its very busy. Though with a little patience the staff attends to your needs as quick as possible and spends the same amount of time with you, making sure to answer any question you have.
Also it is very rare to find a store where they will be honest with you. If they don't sell something or know what products are really needed for your tank they will tell you. I experienced first hand that they didn't sell something I was looking for and they recommended another store where to look for it.
Lastly, keep in mind the store only does store credit and no cash back, though that's really not a problem since they have so many different things to purchase there and also there is no expiration to the store credit and its good towards anything.
All in all the Wet Spot is simply GREAT! I would recommend it to anyone, and I have and not one of them has disagreed with me. So if you are looking for great fish, welcoming staff and good deals, the Wet Spot is where I go!
- Pros: Great Service, Amazing Selection, Good Deals
- Cons: No Cash Back, Gets Busy on Weekends
