If I could give a rating for half a star, I would.

The only reason I'm glad I threw up is because the food was horrible.
I read in the Portland Monthly's best breakfast issue that J&M's was rated for one the top Eggs Benedict in Portland. My fiance and I have been trying to find a place to eat delicious Eggs Benedict after Chef Tucker's closed.
J&M's was terribly disappointing. The eggs were steamed not poached, which makes the rubbery, and the sauce was thin. I try really hard not to waste food but I could only manage to eat half of my meal. Two Eggs Benedict, tea, and a small apple cider cost $26.95. Then at the end, they charge you two dollars to pay your bill if you use your debit card. Wtf.
- Pros: I threw up after
- Cons: I threw up after
Overpriced, and they gouge you for paying with plastic
by JBaker74
The J&M Cafe is a nice place to have breakfast and they have good coffee. However, it is over priced, and instead of taking credit cards for the benefit of their customers, they gouge you at the end if you forget to bring cash by charging a $2.00 ATM fee (not including your bank's fee). I asked if they would ever think of simply taking cards, and the reply was "it helps us keep our overhead low by not paying the 3% for the credit card transaction, we feel it is working well" Of course it helps you keep your overhead low, but your customers want convenience on top of the overpriced food. At an average of $10 a breakfast, I would think that would be important to you. Stingy. . . . very stingy.
- Pros: Good Coffee
- Cons: Overpriced, and they take cash only or charge you for it
10 Years of Happy Eating
by SoulMover
I've been eating at J&M's for about 10 years now. They always come through. It's my favorite place to meet and talk with friends and have a healthy breakfast. Friendly, open, I just wish they opened earlier.
Simple Pleasures
by lunkfast_club
J&M has a short menu, and a simple atmosphere but don't mistake simplicity with a lack of effort. Every item on the menu is delicious and the decor is very appealing. As per Portland's tradition you get your own coffee and water, but this time your water glass is actually a mason jar. You will eat well, and yes, there will be garlic, but we think garlic is fantastic. You can eat breakfast and stave off heart disease at the same time! How fantastic is that?
- Pros: The food and the atmosphere.
- Cons: The bathroom is down the hall and one of us got temporarily locked out of the restaurant...
chef needs help
by yemango
the menu looks great, except for an overabundance of garlic in every savory item. they were kind enough to omit the garlic from my scramble, but it was instead smothered in parmesan cheese shavings which were entirely too salty and left no opportunity for me to taste the eggs. the waitress was accomodating, but failed to mention that the potatoes are covered in garlic too! it left me with a stomachache, and i only ate half of it. also, i ordered a single shot latte and got a double - some communication breakdown between the waitress and espresso bar. the only thing that was pleasing was the fresh-squeezed OJ. and i may go back for the cornmeal waffle.
- Pros: fresh squeezed OJ
- Cons: heavy on the spices. non-organic eggs
Cozy cafe
by swimmer_biker
Small with a warm atmosphere to this cafe. Portions were small, but good. Menu has a wide variety. coffee was definitely good. Serve your own coffee at this place as you walk in. They don't accept credit cards here, though. That's definitely a drag in the 21st century.
- Pros: Ambience, Food and variety of items on menu
- Cons: no credit cards. ATM is provided for debit cards
Yummy
by msomera
I really like the feel of the place and the food is really good. Simple menu but everything we have tried is great. The service is not super friendly, but it's fairly quick. Worth going to for sure.
- Pros: GREAT food
- Cons: long wait at times
Great breakfast place
by duckie1976
We've been here twice and both times it's been great. I love the space. It's not over done, it's open and comfortable. The menu is a little 'adult' for breakfast... Both times I've been there my taste buds haven't been ready for the complex flavors many of their breakfast items have. They do have basic eggs and toast, but many of their scrambles are pretty heavy on garlic or even mustard. The lox plate is fabulous and affordable ($7). The waffles are also great. This is a low key place to have breakfast with friends/family and not be stuck fighting for a table, sitting on your neighbors lap, or eating super greasy diner food.
- Pros: great food, spacious dining room
- Cons: no credit cards :(
Kitschy country comfort food in an eastside industrial setting.

In Short
The charm of the farm meets warehouse spaciousness--old wood fridge, Mason jars for glasses and high, wood-beamed ceilings. Brunch is a hit, with an array of fluffy egg or tofu scrambles to choose from. Belgian cornmeal waffles topped with apples and pomegranate are crisp and tender. Sandwiches, salads and breakfasts served during lunch hours are equally bountiful. The Reuben is piled thick with corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing and oozy Emmentaler cheese.
Resting on laurels? Maybe/Maybe Not
by bigredrider
I have been a long time fan of J&M but the last couple breakfasts have been a bit lackluster. The eggs were overdone just a touch, the potatoes flavorless, the toast super-dry. The coffee and service remain excellent. I just hope they're not resting on their laurels and just are having some temporary issues. Come on J&M, refocus on the food... We love you.
- Pros: Coffee, Service
