i pay to sit where i want to

by decernment at Citysearch

I was there on Friday September 11th for lunch. The place was less than half full at eleven thirty. We asked to sit in the inner room and at the window. The rude man doing the seating was clearly irritated that we didn't want to sit next to people in the outer room. He took us to a far table in the corner away from the window and said "you will have to sit here".

We had requested a table that sat four by the window as it was the only one open in the inner room. He gave us a small two person table. Later, he seated two people at a four person table.

There are too many good restaurants in Portland who, especially given the economic climate here, will be glad to see me and treat me as if i am the one paying to eat there.

  • Pros: food is good.
  • Cons: person seating was rude

"Cup and Saucer"?

by blastik at Citysearch

More like "Cup and Hipsters". This place is more of a haven for young people to spend their trust fund dollars as they try to look more cool than the people at the table next to them. It's in a trendy location, so it attracts the same in its people. The food is mediocre at best. They only have whole food items, and certainly do not have more traditional breakfast offerings like waffles, pancakes, etc. The food itself is greasy spoon style, really not that great. There is almost constantly a line waiting to get in to the place, so sitting around for 30 minutes before you get a decent table is standard practice. I'm not sure why this place has such a good reputation. I'm guessing the good rap was created by the hipsters who flock there.

  • Pros: the staff is friendly
  • Cons: everything else

very slow service-- so so food, think--tats manditory for job?

by luvkona at Citysearch

We waited for 50 minutes for a table, many other customers left. We ordered and there was only 3 other tables of people b/4 us, total of 7 breakfast, it took 45 minutes for our breakfast to arrive. Once it did arrive they never did check back to see how things were going, just dropped off the bill and took the plates. Breakfast was just so-so. Won't be going back, this is the second time for bad service.

  • Pros: none
  • Cons: horrible service, marginal food

Good Food, Awful Service

by newdawnnewday at Citysearch

I'm giving this place a low rating based totally on the service. The food on the other hand is good. I loved the black bean omelette. Every time we've gone there though, the hosting staff is incredibly rude. The waiters have always been fabulous though. We kept going back for the food but the last time we visited the rudeness was just way out of line and we will never go back. We had visitors from L.A. and wanted to take them to our favorite breakfast spot. We walk in, four adults and one child. We are not greeted, we are just stared at.........I thought the Eastside was supposed to be welcoming and diverse. We were a multi etchnic group, a Hispanic, an East Indian and two Asians and were looked at like we were totally out of place. When the host came by to check on the list of those waiting to be seated, he looked at our name and party of 5 and said "Well I don't have a table for five so oh well." I could not believe my ears. We saw him seat two white women in a booth that we could have fit in, instead of asking them to wait ONE MINUTE while he cleared the table for two that two other patrons had just left. It was truly saddening and disappointing, we walked out embarrassed in front of our out of town guests and just overall horrible about the experience. I know this is a favorite spot of many and I'm sure some Asian or East Indian or Hispanic will read this and say they weren't treated as we were, but this was our experience and at the time we were the only non-whites present so we called it as we saw it. For a place that isn't exactly sparkling clean, they sure act with an air of superiority over us *minorities* We will never go back.

  • Pros: good breakfast
  • Cons: cramped seating, awful service

not a good dinner place

by yakdog at Citysearch

Breakfasts may be good, buy the home fries with my sandwich were barely warm and mostly burnt, the sandwich order was wrong, they were running out of various things and the service was not attentive. I appreciate what they stand for, but would prefer that it came with decent food. That being said, the scones were delicious, the beer was fairly priced and the people were nice. Maybe you just have to be careful what you order.

used to be good

by robtx at Citysearch

I had breakfast at cup and saucer on sunday. The food has never been great but acceptable and I enjoyed the atmosphere. This time the service was terrible. The waiter acted like everything was an inconvenience, even when he brought the wrong order. When I went up to pay he calculated the bill incorrectly. No problem, but when I questioned it he tossed it back at me with out saying anything. When it was pointed out that he made a simple mistake he took the money and said nothing. It was as if he never learned to say thank you or sorry.

  • Pros: nice crowd
  • Cons: , service
