very happy hour!
by frogsoup123
we got there around 4:30ish in the middle of the week, not too many others there, but just enough, the service was not too much,or too little he did a great job and seemed to be the only server there.
the food was to die for! and so inexpensive.
raspberry lavender lemon drop is my new favorite thing!
thanks Bread and Ink
- Pros: great happy hour
Good little place
by jennn1976
Good little place, I tend to alternate between this place and cup and saucer when I'm looking for breakfast on hawthorn. They are a little more expensive than cup and saucer, but the atmosphere is more "decorated" and the servers more... clean cut I want to say? Overall a good breakfast place, I have not been there for any other meal times as has been commented on below.
Mediocre
by KSW
Curry Chicken was mediocre at best. The curry was standard yellow curry that tasted like it came from a can from Food 4 Less. The rice was also undercooked. Although I lived in SE Portland my whole life this was the first time I've been here and probably the last.
- Pros: quiet
- Cons: the food
worst meal of all time
by griff15
first off - Not comfortable unless you are clearly one of the totally hip and cool Hawthorne neighborhoodies. We went for Sunday breakfast - waited 15 minutes to order, then another 35 minutes to get food. Meanwhile two tables that had come in after us were served their food. I got the Brioche French Toast - totally gooey and undercooked inside.- Not edible at all. The side order of sausage was barely warm and hard as rock. My husband got the biscuits and gravy . It had obviously sat around and then was reheated by microwave - too long! the edges of the gravy were crusty all around the plate and it was way too hot to even think about eating. The biscuits underneath were nothing but mush.... Save your money!
- Cons: Lousy food
Worst dining experience in a long time
by peter500
It took us over an hour to be served, and the quality of food was poor. One in our party wanted vegetarian/whole food. He asked about the lentil stew, but this was made with chicken stock. He asked for a couple of minutes to make anothe choice, but it took 15 or so minutes for the waitress to return. At that point he ordered the lentil stew because there was nothing else on the menu. After about 20 minutes, the waitress returned and said they were out of lentil stew. She recommended the squash risotto. Then we waited another 30 minutes to get our food. The squash risotto was mostly risotto and the restaurant charged $15 for this (very overpriced for basically pasta). The other 2 on the party had the pork entre and this was dry and tough. We won't be going there again.

A Portland breakfast
by wnyraver
Just what I expect and better when I go out for breakfast in Portland. It was a bit of a wait which we expected but it was nice out so it was not so bad and we had pleasant conversation with others in line. Coffee was offered during the wait, so nice.
Eggs were more than just eggs with ingredients thrown in, they actually had some flavor to them and were nice and fluffy. Toast came out hot which I cant even seem to manage at home when walking from the toaster to my couch.
Good OJ, decent coffee, decent service but better than average for most of Portland. I would take other people here.
- Pros: Good food, good service, fun staff and good people watching
- Cons: bit pricy, bit small but cosy
Consistent excellence
by smojo
Bread & Ink remains one of the most consistently excellent restaurants in Portland. I have been a customer for over 20 years, and it's always my choice when I want a place to settle in for a comfortable stretch. Familiar with chefs there over the years, I know that the owners simply will not compromise on ingredients: Everything is fresh, and often local and organic. The dishes are inventive, the breakfast fantastic, and I have consistently had excellent service (sometimes to get good service it helps to be a kind, respectful customer).
A general comment to all of us amateur restaurant reviewers... This a great communication tool, but one that is often abused. To deem a restaurant "Dread and Ink" after one visit is irresponsible and childish. Professional reviewers visit a restaurant an average of SEVEN times, on each day of the week, and at different times of the day. If you don't even know what lox is, how can you form a credible opinion? Perhaps you might like to give a place at least one more try before writing a scathing review. That would be the Portland thing to do.
- Pros: Portland at its best
- Cons: Tell me again why I can't have hashbrowns on the weekend?
Wowza Waffles
by northwester
I seriously could not stop thinking about these waffles weeks later. They were divine. And I just had the normal ones on the main menu. I haven't even ventured over to their outdoor waffle bar. Haven't tried anything else, but our service was promt and friendly. No complaints here!
- Pros: Waffle deliciousness
- Cons: Nothing noticable.
Dread and Ink.....
by tmartin11
Negative stars and 2 big thumbs down! We were going through P-town last weekend, and decided to stop in for a late breakfast at about 1230. The tired hostess hastily exclaimed they are no longer serving breakfast. We were lead to our child-size table among a maze of people. I bonked a lady with my purse on the way. Maybe that is why they seem to only hire pixie sized waitstaff. We were offered coffee upon sitting at the wobbly table. I asked the flustered waiter for some splenda, sugar or whatever. He never brought it out. We decided on the Salmon Lox plate. We waited, all the while sipping our unsweetened dollar store coffee. The waiter brought what looked like some sort of artwork made with sushi. It didn't even look edible. The outer edge of the plate was lined with cucumbers and tomato slices. The inside was one lettuce leaf. Then topped with a few shreds of raw fish.... The description of this dish said "smoked salmon on a bed of fresh vegetables" After sitting and staring at the untouched "food" for about 10 mins, the waiter finally asked "Is that not what you ordered?" I replied " I didn't order raw fish" He then replied, "It's not raw, it's pickled" Then wandered off into the crowd. He never returned. After about 10 more mins of sitting there, one of the pixies came over to hand us the check! I asked for a box, she quickly returned, saw us put the uneaten lunch in the box, and took our $.....This was $15.50 totally wasted. There was no offer to exchange our meal, or even ask what was wrong with it. I couldn't even give that lunch away. I tried. It ended up being thrown away. Maybe I am just too old-fashioned, but when a customer is unhappy with their order, you fix it-and put some sugar on the table for goodness sakes. Needless to say, we will not be returning to the Bread and Ink. I have renamed it Dread and Ink...because I dread going there and wasting $15...
