local haunt

I live just a few blocks away, so I spend many a night here. The service is good, and the drinks are stiff. Nothing super amazing about this place, but the patio's pretty cool.
Yummy

My boyfriend and I come here all the time, even when we moved 30 mins away, we still made the drive.
The people are nice, and the food is yummy.
Don't Forget to try the soup.
Not many bars make homemade soup, it even beats my grandmas.
Bar of the Gods has the best,
Despite the thick cloud of smoke

I have been going to BOG for as long as I can remember it's presence on Portland's famed Hawthorne BLVD. It took a couple years for the hipster scene to attack it... I remember when I could go inside and expect nothing but chain smoking bikers and kick butt hot mama's but they've relocated to Anthony's down the street... Truly I don't care about who hangs out there as long as I can get a place to sit and partake in one of the greatest sandwiches known to man and woman kind.... The Persephone, named after my favorite Greek Goddess. This SPICY, and I mean spicy, meatball sub, is the BEST meatball sub you can find this side of NYC! The beans and rice are incredible! The diversity of the menu cannot be beat, nor can the price and flavor! The fact that I can taste the awesomeness of their food over the thick heavy cloud of smoke, well that right there speaks for itself!
- Pros: Best Bar Menu in Portland
- Cons: Smoke smell is awful
Cal your the best bartender

- Cons: NOne
BOG rocks!

By far my favorite bar in Portland. Despite a "hipster" reputation, most everyone there (staff and patrons) are super friendly. The food is super yummy especially the sandwiches and vegetarian fare. Although they don't open til 5pm, it's the best happy hour in town with dollar PBRs and cheap booze til 8. The place seems to get about the right amount of people on weekends to fill up, but not be too crazy. A great date spot if you aren't looking for something super classy. Yes it's dark and the music is loud but the tunes are good and they show movies with the subtitles on which is fun. The Hawthorne "barmuda triangle" as they call it is kind of out of the way but it's nice to be able to wander around the neighborhood if you need to really kick your liver into high gear. I never walk out of the BOG feeling like i should have gone somewhere else. The place gets five stars and two shockers up for sure!
- Pros: good service, nice people
- Cons: smokey and loud
The name says it all!

Were to start. The atmosphere is great, if you dont want to have a good time, meet real people and stay positive then dont go. The drinks are great the price is right and the bartenders are the best (even if the big bald guy isnt there anymore). Friendly, quick (if you go to the well to order, hint hint) and HOT as hell!!!! I love dark bars and this one is the darkest, it feels like you can disappear right into the walls. No wounder it was voted in the top twenty of dive bars in the u.s. by STUFF MAG., its a freakin portland icon. Get to the BOG and have some fun. Dont forget if you act like an a__ you get treated like one people.......Ex-tender in P-TOWN.
- Pros: Atmosphere
- Cons: With popularity comes smoke!
Good food, real cheap beer but overtly smoky
by starbuck_1979
I think my companions and I decided to patronize the BOG simply based on fascination with its name. Well, and we also heard that it had great food and cheap drinks. What more of a motivation do you need? Upon entering the bar, I found it terribly lit (I'm not necessarily a fan of poorly lit place, unfortunately) and extremely smoky. I also almost choked on all that cigarette smoke that was just thick in the air inside. Food menu is regulation bar food menu... appetizers, chicken strips, fish and chips, burgers, sandwiches. Nothing out of the ordinary. The beer was cheap! $2 PBR, $3.5 micros... no complaints there. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich on a hoagie roll with house made BBQ sauce. Amazing! Simply delicious! The pulled pork was tender, juicy and smothered in BBQ sauce. One thing to note is the BOG Jalapeno sauce, which I couldn't get enough of.
Verdict: I would consider returning to BOG, if I wanted to have a pulled pork sandwich and if I wasn't afraid of getting lung cancer from the effects of second hand cigarette smoke.
- Pros: BBQ pulled pork sandwich, cheap beer
- Cons: Too much smoking, too dark
Wowzers

The food is so good! Good drinks! no complaints here. I've been there tons of times and I am always happy with everything. They are usually playing really good movies as well last time I went they were playing The Wiz! EXCELLENT!
- Pros: Food, Pinball, Drinks
- Cons: It gets a little crowded sometimes
Gourmet-caliber pub grub, an ultracasual vibe and cheap drinks draw loyal fans to this Hawthorne neighborhood mainstay.

In Short
Exposed beams and ductwork disappear above a dark, almost cavernous space. Bartenders have to pull out flashlights to check IDs. Plumes of cigarette smoke gather, creating a dense atmosphere around after-work regulars and weekend anti-scenesters. Newcomers may be surprised by the strength of the drinks and tastiness of the food, which includes portobello-and-veggie sandwiches, flash-fried calamari, sweet and spicy coconut shrimp and fries smothered in cheese.

Great DJs with eclectic tastes. Can get a little crowded due to the overwhelming popularity of the 3M DJ Collective.
