We took some friends visiting from Ca here last week. It was very fun, there were three couples and all we Santa's from different areas. All of meals were great, service was awesome as always. It is wonderful to have a place that you can count on to bring folks to that are not from around here.
Pros: Great Food, Great Waiters and Waitresses, GREAT Cooks!
Cons: Not taking reservations...

We ate at Sayler's last night and our service was great. We waited maybe 20 minutes but Teri our server was on the ball and she got right down to business. The atmosphere is totally 70's but it's fun and funky that way. Don't expect the hip "metrosexual and MBA toting yuppy" set here, this is a steakhouse from the time of steak houses. The cowd is mixed if slightly tilted to the 50+ set. The food: Overall the food was good. We enjoyed the prime rib, filet and ribeye. Meat was tender and had some flavor. The relish tray was very cool and we ordered a heap of onion rings. (First timers might want only a half order.) This is an honest meat and potatoes joint, not a lot of flash or glitz. If you looking for that skip Sayler's. The service: We had great service from a waitress who knew her menu and knew how to please customer's with just the right amount of attention. Our wait was very reasonable for 6pm on Friday night at 20 minutes although it did pick up considerably after we arrived. (Hint: go earlier for faster seating) Overall: A very good place to enjoy an piece of meat and potatoes type of dinner. Not flashy but comfortable enough to have a meal and good conversation. The drinks from the bar are good sized and well made, a rarity in Portland. I wouldn't expect Haute Cuisine, but you can expect a decent meal at a good value.
Pros: Drinks, value, service
Cons: parking, no phone reservations

Sayler's is my absolute favorite steakhouse. I am really surprised about the negative feedback. I have been going to Sayler's for over 15 years and have never had a bad experience. I think you should anticipate slower service during the dinner rush, but I have and always will strongly recommend this restaurant.

I am from Georgia and have been in Oregon for the last 3 weeks on business. During the last three weeks the majority of people I have asked about a steak restaurant have mentioned Saylers. I went there tonight 11/2/07 and ordered the 20 oz ribeye. Both the food and service were good, however I was disappointed. I asked that my steak be cooked at a medium, however it came back med-rare. I then sent it back and it was returned with 1/3 being cooked the way I wanted, 1/3 of it under cooked and 1/3 overcooked. Ryan's Steak House from the Southeast ought to move out here, then the people of Oregon would see how good steaks should be cooked. During the past 3 weeks I have eaten at restaurants in and around Bend and in and around Portland and drinking iced tea each time. This restaurant has the best iced tea I have ever drank in Oregon.
Pros: Iced Tea
Cons: Thick steaks not cooked correctly

My boyfriend and I decided to go to Saylers because it was recommended by friends. Before we left, I did a little research. Out of all the restaurants, Saylers had the most reviews. Most of them were bad reviews but we decided to go anyways and experience the restaurant for ourselves and disregard what we read. We were seated right away and were given the relish tray and our drinks. I ordered the prime rib with mashed potatoes and my boyfriend ordered the Filet Mignon with a baked potato. Meantime, the waitresses did the swithcheroo on us without telling us. The new waitress gave us wrong salads to each of us. We both got plain baked potatoes with our entrees while I asked for mashed potatoes and he asked for a baked potato with the works. My prime rib was cooked medium rare and it was probably cooked for a mere 5mins. It was flavorless and I had to use A1 steak sauce which should not be needed for a prime rib. My bf's steak was just as flavorless. I tried adding the steak seasoning but that was tasteless. Overall, they give you a lot of food but the steak entrees were not worth the expensive price. I can get a better Prime Rib elsewhere for a lesser price. The food was mediocre but the waitress was very nice and helpful. Everyone makes mistakes but I was just not impressed with the food. The reviews were right about the soda refills. It took about 10mins for his refill while they asked me for a refill when it was too late. I had already polished off the water When I see a expensive price attached to a meal, I expect the food to be very tasty and worth it. Not sure if we are coming back in the future, but we'll see.
Pros: Good service, leaves you feeling full, great ice cream by Sunshine Dairy
Cons: Overpriced prices, mediocre food

After spending a four years out of the Portland area serving in the military, my family and I decided to visit Sayler's Old Country Kitchen at the recommendation of the Citysearch site. Boy, was this a mistake! Service at this restaurant was abysmal. The hostess was rude, the server was rushed never making eye contact, and drink refills were a chore to get requiring multiple requests. My wife's rare $26 ribeye came out medium well having to be sent back to the kitchen with a major huff from the waitress. My $32 porterhouse came out cooked appropriately at medium, however it wasn't hot but rather luke warm. The manager with whom we spoke to was disinterested in our entire situation. We've filed a dispute with our credit card company over the meal since the restaurant didn't seem to care about the quality of our meal. We won't be returning nor recommending this dive to any other friends.
Pros: Ample parking, fresh bread
Cons: Poor service, unconcerned managers, mediocre food quality, dated

We really like this steak house! We keep coming back and back. When you want to feel like your getting enough food for your money, come here! You WILL NOT leave hungry! Be sure to get here before the lunch and evening rush or you will be waiting in line for a while. The interior is a little dated, but clean. Always friendly service. Before your meal, your greeted with a very yummy relish plate, and if you want more the'll keep it coming. Then bread follow's. If salad comes with your dinner it comes along with the bread. The bread always comes warm and fresh! They have great steak! Always cooked to our liking. We really enjoy the prime rib too! When you leave, you'll be FULL and happy!

We were greeted with a server in a hurry. Greeted us with a dirty tray with our drinking water, silverwear, relish plate, sour cream, and butter. Asked us if we wanted something to drink or an appetizer. We ordered onion rings and a drink, and got our salads before our onion rings came. We had hardly touched our salads, when our steaks came. We felt rushed through our whole dinner. This server needs to learn the meaning of casual dinning. Great food? Did'nt have time to enjoy it! She also needs to learn at her ripe age, service with a smile. Will probably return.
Pros: Good food, good prices.
Cons: Felt rushed through dinner.

I am so glad I found this review site!!! I can't review about the food because we(my husband and daughters) were not able to dine there. We took a road trip to Seattle. So on our way back home we stopped to get gas, I noticed the sign Country Kitchen. So I begged my husband to pull over because I was dying for good country food after a long drive. We were so hungry and we had about 20 more hours to get home. So long story short. We waited to get seated. Granted we were the only ones waiting to get seated. So I decided to use the restroom. Came back a few minutes later, and still not seated. While the four of us waited..people walked in and they were seated...then more..then more..locals i'm sure. So after the last group got seated. My husband finally stated,"Excuse me we were waiting here for 15 minutes and you seated everyone else"...well he was ignored. Then when I finally had an attitude. The lady stated with a mean spirited voice..you'll have to wait. Needless to say..the were not going to seat us or serve us. Our teens daughters were surprised!!! We were never treated like that ever...as I look around...everyone was white. Then we felt it was a racial situation. We were a mixed couple, biracial kids....hubby is white, I'm filipino!!! For goodness sakes it's 2003!!! Okay so this was 4 years ago..but still it really affected me. So if you owners are reading this...if this was not a racial situation...tell me what was it? I've told hundreds or people about what had happened. Being in the travel industry, I usually warn people not to stop and eat at your restaurant. So where did we end up eating? The Taco Bell down the street. End of Rant...sorry Oregonians but I rate my experience there as I do when I lived in Germany with my parents in 1975. Heil Hitler! PT
Pros: Close to Taco Bell
Cons: The worse service I've ever encountered

I really like this steakhouse. Sometimes the wait (Fri/Sat. nights) is a bit long, but once seated you will get good service and great food. They also offer shrimp with you steak. Try it. It's very good.
