The Palms Hotel is not quite a dump, but it is either on its way there or coming slowly back from something worse. It seems a lot has changed since the previous two reviewers stayed here. We had a convention in town and wanted to be reasonably close to the Rose Center, but virtually all hotels nearer were full.

Specifics:

-- They lost our reservation. I called two days beforehand to confirm. The night clerk checked and said we did not have a reservation. I called back in the morning and another clerk found my reservation. I later wished I hadn't called back.

-- The shower rod was broken, and curved down and towards the floor, meaning we could not effectively close the shower curtain.

-- Want to open your toilet kit? The pedestal washstand leaves you only the back of the toilet.

-- There was no place to hang any clothing, not even a hook on the back of the bathroom door, meaning my suit and slacks were draped over a chair. I hung my shirts from edge of the TV cabinet.

-- The old fashioned tiny refrig/freezer had started to defrost, leaving a cold, wet puddle at the base of the entertainment center/dresser that held the refrigerator. We used all our thin, cheap towels to mop up the mess. Not even an apology from management when I brought it to their attention, though they did give me new towels I asked for.

-- Don't expect maid service. Our room was never touched during our Friday morning to Sunday morning stay. Wet towels from the defrosting freezer sat on the bathroom floor for two days.

-- When we arrived at 10:00 a.m., and the two times afterwards during the middle of the day that we visited the office, it was locked. It took 2-3 minutes for someone to answer the bell.

-- Wireless Internet service was intermittent at times.

  • Pros: On the light rail line
  • Cons: Rooms too small for a king bed; no place to hang up any clothes

The Scene
The sign alone--neon palm trees with a cheeky monkey peering down--is worth a drive past this retro-hip gem. Of all the affordable motels sprinkled up and down Interstate Avenue, this one stands out as a charming and fun destination, loaded with character.

The Details
There are 50 rooms here, each decorated with tropical flair. The amenities are a cut above the basics; rooms are stocked with refrigerators and microwaves. There's an outdoor pool, available during Portland's hot summer months. Those who want a little more action can hop the bus right out front and head for downtown.

I stayed here and the room was decent, and pretty clean. They didn't have very many towels in the room. But the manager was very rude to me. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

The High Neon Sign says its all at this fabulous Hotel. With such pleasant customer service and beautifull rooms, this hotel is hard to resist. Quiet Rooms with Max Train at its door step, and Downtown minutes away there is nothing more you can ask for. A+ Quality Service says its all.

  • Pros: Quiet Rooms, Customer Service, Location

I was treated with excellent service and the rooms were incredible at a good price as well. The very nice Neon sign was attractive and grabbed my attention promptly. The employees treated me nicely and gave instant service upon my request. Less than 2 miles from Lyod Center and many other attractions. Recommend this place to everyone and I will be sure to revisit.

  • Pros: Clean Rooms, Comfortable Beds, Tv, Fridge, Microwave
