The Hop is Closer
by madermouse at Citysearch
This was exactly like a burger used to be in the early 70's....before it was gourmet-ized. A very thin, sort of dry tasteless beef patty with the most basic condiments on it. It wasn't anything special. Its the kind of place I'd take my grandpa there because his tastebuds haven't changed in 40 years. The milkshake was just "okay"...a little on the soupy side. But, hey -if you like that sort of thing I suggest going to "The Hop" on Hawthorne just because its closer and cheaper and there's more seating.
Spiffy at Skyline

My family has been going to skyline since my mom was born and she has passed the tradition on to me. When they go out of business I will have to buy their milkshake machine!!!
- Pros: great food, always consitent, good service
- Cons: new owners, bad decorating, outdoor bathroom
Best Burger In Town
by liptylip at Citysearch
Greatest Greasy Spoon in town. Burgers, shakes, Fries, Onion Rings and Homemade Chili are outstanding. The Help is also outstanding. Never a bad experience.
- Pros: Cheap
in the middle of nowhere

What a place! I've heard about it for years and while lost on the hill I came across The Skyline Restaurant. Sure you can find better burgers if you look, but this place has a kind of charm that makes you feel like you're someplace else. Isn't that just what everybody needs once in a while?
- Pros: parking, fast, tasty
- Cons: out of the way
A burger is not just a burger
by garwein at Citysearch
This is still just a simple burger with just meat, lettuce and mayo or butter. Tastes just as good as it did when I was in college. Price has changed much either, inflation taken into consideration.
- Pros: Quality, Price, Location
Mediocre
by irelandb23 at Citysearch
I order the giant cheeseburger and onion rings every time. I have to say, I have to been impressed. It's not worth the inconvenience to get there. I'm noticing more and more that Portlanders would not know tasty food if it hit them in the smacker!
- Pros: Very filling!
- Cons: Poor Parking, Expensive, Not too tasty
Cheesy
by higgins1600 at Citysearch
I had read only good things, but tried it myself and was not impressed. My burger was okay the way any fast food chain is okay. Burgerville is better. My roommate's salad came complete with half a slice of American Cheese on top, which is just cheap. His Fish and Chips were nothing but frozen fish sticks. Maybe I'll go back to try a shake, but the food ain't worth the trip.
A tasty institution

Unassuming, but always excellent. The burger is tasty with no additions--I get mine "all the way"--and the fries are invariably perfect. I keep meaning to try other offerings, but the burger and fried are too tempting.
Definitely Number #1

As a native of Portland who has seen much of the rest of the country, I have sampled burgers everywhere from Dallas to Dubuque, and California to Connecticut; I've made it my avocation. I have yet to encounter a burger that tops Skyline's. Fresh meat cooked to order, perfectly seasoned, fresh toppings, large sesame seed bun, dill pickle, cheese, crunchy onions, juice (oh, that juice! Don't wear your $90 shirt to this place...), and faster service than at any so-called fast food outlet.
The down sides? The owner has turned the restaurant into a virtual Romper Room where one cannot enjoy the best burger in the country without the accompanying cacophony of screams and whines from the ever-present gaggle of little ones in varying states of unhappiness while surrounded with crayon-scribbled renditions of everything from burgers to dinosaurs. And. . . the fries are frozen, a travesty to serve frozen fries with burgers this good.
The food demands five stars - but if you're looking for atmosphere, may I suggest the nearest Chuck E. Cheese - it will be more relaxing.
- Pros: Great burgers & shakes, lots of parking, instant friendly & efficient service
- Cons: Romper Room ambience, frozen fries
Over-priced
by oberon099 at Citysearch
I thought, after readint the reviews here, to give 'em a try. Lots of good things going on there. Help was marvelous. Service was average. Burger was on the puny side and a bit under-cooked. Plopped onto a cold ceramic plater without benefit of any kind of garnish. "side-of-fries" came on another cold ceramic plate. A 6 ounce glass of tea @ $1.25 just sealed my opinion. No matter how good the service, or the food, the prices suck. A cafeteria style meal at gourmet prices. I ate alone and the tab was over $10, including the tip.
- Pros: Taste, Attitude, Friendly
- Cons: Price, Portion, Presentation
