Great groomers and customer service staff
by kheeley at Citysearch
i was surprised to see the previous review detailing an experience at townhouse. i have been bringing my dog to townhouse for many years and have never had anywhere near the experience listed. i bring my dog in for grooming every 4 weeks as the groomer recommends so i definately have visited during summer months. Each time the staff are professional, organized, and cheerful. They even recognize me when i come in the door. ( a huge plus)
in the summer months i know they are busy and are often booked days in advance so i must plan my grooming ahead of schedule but never have i felt like it was an assembly line. in fact i would not dream of going anywhere else because my experiences over the years could not be any better! i wouldn't trust anyone else.
- Pros: Personalized service
Compassionate, caring staff

We have been taking our terrier to Townhouse for years. She is very old (almost 21), and the staff are very gentle with her. When she had trouble eating, they hand-fed her. They take her out for play time. They make sure she get her medications. She has been skittish about other kennels, but she does great at Townhouse.
- Pros: great staff
Our two dogs like it; we like them too.

Professional, kind; we feel good about taking our dogs here. Previous reviewer was so nasty and blatent in trying to drive away business. They sound as pampered and entitled as their unfortunate poodle.
The most caring kennel I've come across

I don't live in Portland but in the DC area, and would never have come across Townhouse Pet Care Center, had it not been for a relative (who did live in Portland) passing away suddenly. His dog was being boarded at Townhouse, and over the course of several weeks, Stacey and her staff worked diligently with me to find Darby - the female German Shepherd - a new home. You can read the full story on my blog (CitySearch is not letting me publish the URL, but if you Google "Waxing UnLyrical" and then search for "Darby" on my blog, you'll find it).
I can't thank Stacey enough for everything she did for Darby. Even when we thought we might not have a home, she never once implied that she would no longer be able to care for Darby. Since I live across the country, that meant a lot. It's my opinion that there's probably no better place in Portland to have your pets cared for than Townhouse. Stacey and her staff rock.
- Pros: Personal attention and care
- Cons: None that I know of
Negative and Negligent
by domdom77 at Citysearch
My wife and I have a poodle with very curly hair. Sometimes it gets matted, especially in the summer. We took him in to Townhouse and he came back completely shaved. When we told them this wasn't what we asked for, the owner blamed us and said my wife was a bad dog mom.
Another time our dog scratched his paw bloody in the kennel. The bag we sent with him was streaked with it. When we brought this to their attention, we were met with blank stares and an overall negative vibe as if we had done something wrong. Classic psychology of the unaccountable. I would have been satisfied if they showed some concern. They didn't. They acted like it was our fault.
After this last time at Townhouse, our dog began acting skittish and fearful. This is not one of our lively and gregarious pet's traits. It took about a month for him to get back to his normal self. This left a very bad taste. We never went back after that.
Now we go to Beauty and the Beast across the street. They are kind and gentle with the pets and the owners. On top of that, they're cheaper too. Go there instead. Townhouse is not the place for your beloved pooch.
- Cons: rude attitude, poor communication

I leave my black lab there regularly. (Bruce) His is an very old dog (+15 years) The staff always takes great care of him. I feel safe leaving Bruce with Townhouse when I'm not around.

GREAT GROOMING!!
by Bonnie1 at Citysearch
We have been taking our giant Labradoodle, DeeOGee to Townhouse for grooming for over 3 1/2 years. On our initial visit, we provided the groomer a picture of how we would like him to look and what we expected. She did a wonderful job and has been consistent since then with the cut, nail trim and inside ear cleaning. Based on the time of the year we do vary the length of the cut to accommodate the weather. We are NEVER disappointed!
When we take DeeOGee in for his seasonal haircut, we always receive rave reports from the groomer and the staff on what a “good boy” he is. That always makes us proud of him, not to mention confident, knowing that he’s well taken care of at Townhouse.
We often get compliments on his cut, especially from other Labradoodle owners.
We would highly recommend Townhouse Pet Care Center to anyone!
- Pros: Professional, excellent customer service, caring attitude
- Cons: Absolutely None!!
poor grooming and poor boarding
by aelauritsen at Citysearch
I have continued to use Townhouse so many times because I keep hoping that if I try harder and am more explicit, they will eventually give my dog a good cut (I like the price--forty buck for grooming). I have a miniature labradoodle with long fleece coat. I was very explicit with the groomer that I didn't want the nose shaved (because they always do a weird shave that no other groomer does). I also wanted a long cut.
What she did instead was shave my dog to 1/4 inch, and then she shaved the nose to the skin to look like a poodle, and also shaved the top of the tail but left the end swishy long---it looks like a feather duster. I have no idea what she was trying to accomplish. And there are a couple of places where she must have slipped with the clippers because there are bald spots. literally. The dog looks awful--even my six year old in front of the lady said "that's a really silly looking haircut!" Awkward. It isn't worth the savings to go there.
And on to the boarding--i have used them four times now. This last time, when she was going to be there from 8 until after work for the grooming, I asked them if she could be let out of her cage to go in the run, and they told me no because she would be busy all day with grooming. I said "it takes all day to groom her?" and she said "yep." so, i decided to get off work early and picked my dog up at 3. The second they brought my dog to me, she peed like a race horse....it was obvious that they hadn't let her go out ALL DAY! And that is consistent with the other times we have picked up the dog. They have small wire cages and a tiny run, and I honestly doubt that they take the dogs into it. I will never use them again.
I board my dog at Charleton Kennels, and love them and will continue to use them in spite of the hike out to Sauvie Island. I haven't found a replacement groomer. :(
- Pros: inexpensive and usually have open appts.
- Cons: very poor grooming, lame facility, don't take dogs out to go
i wouldn't recommond it

i brought my dog here for boarding for 4 days over xmas. i thought the staff was rude and the care was terrible. when i came to pick up my dog she felt dirty, something which she hardly ever is, the staff handed me her bed which i had broughten from home in a plastic bag soaked in urin. my dog is 4.5 yrs old she doesn't have accidents on her bed! they said they would be close an xmas and i now believe they were not around to take care of the dogs and this is why my dogs bed was soaked in urin and she was dirty from laying in her own urin. i was very unhappy with the service and care and would not bring my dog back to this facility. i would look around to everywhere else before taking your pet to this place!
- Cons: unfriendly, bad care, rude staff
Rely on them
by wooster at Citysearch
I take my dog to Townhouse for grooming and boarding several times a year. I'm very happy with their professionalism about food and medication, and have been perfectly happy with their reservation system. She always seems glad to see them, so I'm confident that they're kind to the dogs in their care.
First timer - Horrible experience
by jmp84 at Citysearch
I have never taken my cat to the groomers before. But she is mentally disabled and at the age of 3 she has the motivation and cleanliness of a 13 year old cat. I could not keep up with her matted hair, her constant dandruff, her everything that comes with a cat not cleaning themselves (I bathe her biweekly to keep up, brush her every night etc) so I thought I would try a groomers to help. I spent 60+ dollars. They bathed her, and didn't even finish grooming her because she was scared of the blowdryer! Well let her air dry and then brush her out! I picked her up and she was shedding I sneezed all the way home. when I took her out of the carrier she was shedding more than before. I was so upset! I spent so much money and being a college student I don't have that much. And it was wasted! I spent 30 minutes brushing her out, and she still was shedding. I felt like I was robbed. I would not recommend this place at all. I have been scared to go to a groomers since.
- Cons: doesnt finish the job
