We've been here twice and it's a great watering hole... The happy hour beers are only $3 and the pour is right on - no cheater glasses here! I saw the fish and chips go by over and over, and without a doubt they look right tasty... We stick to the pub grub call the "Scotch Egg" which is a hard boiled egg covered with sausage and deep fried crispy brown - Mein Gott it soaks up the beer buzz and gets you ready for more!!! Sunny patio and jocular patrons. A real down home place.
Pros: Outdoor Patio, Big Glasses of Micros
Cons: Too Many Delicious Beers

This is an OK attempt to create a pub in North America. The Boddingtons was average. Atmosphere good except for one major downside—awful music playing much too loud, rendering pub-type conversation impossible. If it has to be left on, simply turn it down and the atmosphere will improve 100%. Pubs aren’t places for swinging singles with blaring music.
Pros: could be a good pub
Cons: overly loud, bad music

The Rose&Thistle is THE best place to eat fish and chips, and the staff is great. I just moved into the neighborhood, and I plan to return. Thanks!

I cannot say enough for both Bobby and Sandy and this great place to hang with friends, become part of the family, or just an occasional meal. I strongly recommend Bobby's Fish and Chips! Yum, Yum! ------------------- We recently lost a very special person, Bobby passed away August 26th,2006. Some say he was just a crotchity, cranky coot, opinionated. Well, ok we all said it! This was all part of Bobby's charm. He also had a lot of heart, he just didn't want anyone to see his softy side. He put everything on the 'table', always said it like it was. A world traveler, he could recall each and every trip in great detail as if he had just gotten home. He always had something extremely interesting to toss out for discussion, or told great jokes, depending on his mood. Aw, and no one can flirt like Bobby! He even made an old 'broad' like me feel good. Sandy, we all love you. These last few weeks have been so hard on you, more than any of us could ever understand. You are a lady through and through. You are also a very special person. God Bless and Guide You, T

If barmaids, waitresses, barmen back home in Scotland were as slow and unfriendly as this lot appear to be there would be no one in the pub at all, service was hopeless carried out by a sullen waitress and if your going to sell DRAUGHT beer (not DRAFT) at least learn to pour it,the smug big headed owner was a big turn off too.

Sigh... as a Scot I found this place very close to a place I could truly enjoy to frequent. Atmosphere was semi-authentic and the food was far better than the fare in an actually Scottish or Irish pub. However, there were a few things that lessened the experience for my wife (also a Scot) and I: 1. A bad pour of Guiness (a common complaint in Portland and most US bars) - Why why why IF you are going to sell Guiness - LEARN TO POUR IT or don't sell it. 96% of the taste of Guiness is created during it's proper and patient draw from it's special tap. 2. The waitstaff was completely incompetent, she was completely confused by the fact that we came from the bar and had our tab transferred outside. It must have completely thrown her as we were completely ignored (despite eye-contact twice) for over 20 minutes. My wife had to wave her arms wildly to get the waitresses' attention. She finally meandered over unapologectally and made some lame excuse - ridiculous. If tips could only be written as negative numbers... 3. To the staff - PAY ATTENTION and perserve the atmosphere. I was (of course) in a kilt and some slobbering drunk at the bar that was a "friend of the owner" called me belted plaid a "skirt" twice! Now, I have never received that kind of disrespectful mocking anywhere else EVER in Portland and I should have bounced the old tosser right there but was so surprised at the lack of protocol in a supposed "Scottish" establishment - I mean - that is just lame. I've no love for the English but at least the Horse Brass has an authentic English Pub feel. I was hoping to find it's equal in the style of the Scots. Sadly, I have not but will try it again - once more.
Pros: The only Scottish Themed Pub in Portland
Cons: Needs to do a better job at being the only Scottish Themed Pub in Portland

The service was way below average at this pub. I thought it looked like a friendly pub, but I was mistaken. I am not sure why we had such snotty, rushed service as it was a Sunday and not busy. I think my husband and I were 10 times nicer to the server than they were to us. The drinks were weak and poorly made as well.
Pros: clean
Cons: weak drinks, bad service, nascar on telly

The first thing you feel when you walk in is welcome...Bobby and his staff are the best at hospitality. I chanced upon this place while trying to find shelter from the heat last July. Little did I know I would run into some of the best fare in Irvington, but also the best people. In an arae that can be somewhat "snooty" at times, this place holds the most down to earth, friendly folks-no matter what day or time you go. Thanks guys!
Pros: Good Atmosphere, Location, Prices

This is a fantastic place to hang out on a HOT Portland day. Whether you prefer basking in the sun on the fabulous patio out back, complete with beer garden, or cooling your heels indoors with the AC and the quaint decor, this place is perfect. The food is good, the service better! Stay a while, and grab a game from the game shelf. We stayed for three hours, eating good food, unlimited iced tea, and playing Scrabble and darts. A hidden Portland treasure, visit today. And if Danielle is your waitress, be prepared for some top notch service!
Pros: Food & Patio, Fun games!, Service
Cons: Parking
