Yuck!!!!!!

by Jan P

How could anyone recommend this place?

The egg roll wrap was raw on the inside and very greasy .

The shrimp fried rice had only a small amount of shrimp.

The chicken egg foo young was strange tasting, like they had added a bunch of flour to it.

They can't even get the condiments right. I asked for duck sauce and got catsup!. When I called them on it they told me that was their homemade duck sauce. This is a first...a chinese restaurant that serves catsup as duck sauce.

Horrible, just horrible!

  • Pros: attentive and nice employees
  • Cons: THE FOOD !!!!!!!!

BEST CHINESE IN TOWN

by PDX4Life

This restaurant was my grandfather's favorite when he was a child, my father's favorite when he was a child, and has now been mine for the past 20+ years. My wife is pregnant and we are sure that our fourth generation will experience this incredible restaurant for years to come...if my wife doesn't eat them out of business in the next 8 months :). Great comfort food, fun Friday night outings, open late for the 'post-bar' stop. Only downfall is the part of town...it has become pretty sketchy... but it isn't the restaurants fault and you can't really expect them to move after 60+ years. Don't forget to rub Buddah's belly on the way out!

  • Pros: Family owned for over 60 years, consistency, friendly staff
  • Cons: Nada...except for being stuck in a bad part of PDX

wonderful prices, service, atmosphere and food

by Jessi03

This restaurant has been around for years, and I know why. They have wonderful food, and they can make virtually anything with no msg or salt. I have a fairly large family, and they had no problem seating us in a minimal amount of time. I think my favorite thing on the menu is the curry rolls and general tso's chicken, I recommend trying them if you ever decide to visit.

  • Pros: service, food, atmosphere
  • Cons: no delivery

Best American-Style Chinese Food...and Comfort Food

by borninpdx

To be perfectly fair, Canton Grill serves the best (IMHO) *American-Style* Chinese food. It's some of my Comfort Food.

Their most popular dishes don't come from Szechuan, Hunan, or any of the regions of the China we have since learned about. So what? This is history, kids! This was the only "Chinese" food you could get back when "Father Knows Best" episodes were new. This was exotic to a lot of our American parents and grandparents. I speak to those of us who can remember when Going Out To Dinner was a major family event. Our parents had to Save Up to take us out. This food takes us back to a time when we couldn't get a bowl of pho to save our Euro-Ameri-centric lives and none of us had even heard of sushi.

In the entry way, they have posted menus dating back to the 1940s. The prices have changed, but you can still taste what our families saved to enjoy. The service is just as friendly and loving as ever, at least.

There are some "real" Chinese dishes on the menu, but it's that celery-and-bean-sprouts Pork Chow Mein (with the crunchy noodles underneath) that makes "Mister" and me choose Canton Grill when we feel like treating ourselves to some memories and satisfying our cravings.

My father took me there when I was probably four or five years old. There, I learned how to use chopsticks! In my little world, the Number 3 combination (Fried Shrimp, Pork Chow Mein--see above--and Pork Fried Rice) WAS Chinese food. That was all Chinese children ever ate, in my mind. Imagine my delight when we tried the Fried Won Ton for the first time...

That's what Comfort Food's all about: the quality of the memories and the efforts to reexperience them. That's what's so precious about the Canton Grill. Oh, and Number 3 combination is still there, and still called "Number 3." How cool is that?

  • Pros: History, Comfort Food, Parking, Great Service
  • Cons: I wish I could walk there!!

Great!!!

by alecwest

First, unlike a lot of other restaurants, Canton Grill recognizes those over 55 as being eligible for a "senior" discount (I'm 56). The service is friendly and fast and the food reminds me of what seems like days gone by ... when Chinese food tasted like the Chinese food I remember ... not corrupted by definitions or expectations of effete snobs who may "specialize" in a given cuisine (but not on MY taste buds).

One note. The hours of operation shown are incorrect. They open at 11AM promptly every day.

  • Pros: Ample parking, fast friendly service at reasonable prices. If you're 55, you get senior discount.
  • Cons: None that I'm aware of.

The tasty, late night alternative!

by shannawithavon

When I get sick of all of the crappy fast food I eat this is my favorite alternative. Give me an order of fried rice and and fried shrimp with some hot yellow mustard and I am set! Great late night, just call ahead and pick it up 15 mins. later.

  • Pros: open late and affordable
  • Cons: they don't deliver

Check it Out

by raeshyne

I have been going there for years. The food is great, a few dishes lack the authentic taste, but who cares about a few dishes? Do not even look at the American Menu, these people are authentic Chinese trying to cater to us, they don't do American food well. The service is usually good, however they do replace Waitress#1 quite often (I believe this position is the only one filled by non family/ someone who hasnt been there the last 5-15 years) and Waitress one causes the service to lack greatly. However, you can meet the owner any night of the week, friendly serivce, good food.

I would recommend not going too late at night, they offer karaoke in the bar, and unless you want to join he tone deaf locals - its a little difficult to attempt to tune them out during an otherwise enjoyable experience.

  • Pros: Authentic friendly Atmosphere
  • Cons: Karaoke Late Night Howling

Great Egg Flower Soup....

by zarahw

But everything else was less than mediocre.

The Chicken Subgum Chow Mein was too much onion, not enough celery.

The Pork Fried Rice had no pork, it was dry, and a funny dark brown color as if it had cooked too long.

The Sweet & Sour sauce was good, but the fried shrimp we ordered it for were small, soggy chunks.

The BBQ Pork was dry and over-cooked.

The Egg Flower soup is AMAZING though. The best I've ever had.

  • Pros: Egg Flower Soup!
  • Cons: Everything else.

Poorly Made Americanized Chinese

by bayoudiva

I visited the Canton Grill years ago before I discovered the out of this world Chinese at Wong's Garden on Woodstock. The food was nasty then and it's still nasty. I thought maybe over the past 14 years it could have changed..... not even! YUCK!

  • Pros: none
  • Cons: everything
